FIDE has changed the qualification conditions for the Candidates Tournament 2024
The FIDE Council approved the reform of the selection paths for the 2024 Candidates Tournament. The main innovation is the creation of a new qualifying trajectory through various FIDE rating tournaments, where points are awarded as part of the FIDE Series (FIDE Circuit). The second change was an increase in the number of qualifying places from the World Cup – from two to three. The player who has scored more points by the end of 2023 will receive a coveted place in the most prestigious of all chess tournaments.
Qualification system for the Candidates Tournament:
A. 1 qualifying place – loser of the 2023 World Championship match;
B. 3rd place – FIDE World Cup 2023;
C. 2 places – FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament-2023;
D. 1st place – the player with the best result in FIDE-rated tournaments for 2023 (these events must meet certain criteria);
E. 1st place – the player with the highest “classic” rating on January 1, 2024, provided that this athlete has played at least four tournaments that fall under the required criteria
