The first industrial revolution had great benefits to the country. But which section of the country had the greatest benefits? the North or the South? That would be the North because there were more railroads built in the North, there were way more factories built in the North, and gained imports worth over 20 million dollars.
To begin with, Railroads were a huge part of the industrial revolution because they provided many benefits.According to the 2nd photo in the first document, it states “ In 1860, 70% of the railroads in the country ran through the Northern states. In the south, farmers were more likely to transport crops by boat”(Document 1). This shows that the North had way more railroads than the South which is beneficial to the North because railroads allowed faster transportation and more job opportunities. It also shows that the South lacks railroads and transports crops by boats which is not as efficient so that gives the North an advantage. Also according to the first photo in the first document, all the railroads that were built in 1850 and between 1850-1860 are in the North and when you look in the south, you can tell that there are very few compared to the North. This also shows that there were way more railroads built in the North than in the South which leads to many benefits to the North that the south doesn't have. That means life in the south is less efficient than the north because they lack railroads that hold many advantages to them and does not boost the economy as much because of the lack of jobs. So it's pretty clear that The north had much more railroads than the South that benefited them.
Furthermore, factories were also a big part of the Industrial revolution that also provided many benefits. According to the second document, it states “ The North's economy was based on manufacturing and commerce, with more than five times as many factories as in the south”(Document ll). This shows that the North had way more factories than the South which is beneficial to the North because factories made it easier and cheaper to manufacture goods quickly, improves efficiency, and provides plenty of jobs to people. Factories are also something the south lacks which means that they rely on imported goods and paying more taxes which is not very efficient. In addition, according to the photo on the left in the seventh document, it shows an image of a woman working pleasantly in a factory and on the right you can see slaves being treated harshly. This shows that the working conditions in the North were safe for women so that not only men have to work but so can women. That helps families earn more money, factories hire more people and labor increases which makes work faster which can boost the economy. Factories were a highly beneficial factor in the industrial revolution that the North had which the south lacked which made the North benefit more.
Lastly, money is what mainly drives the economy and growth. According to the fourth document , it states “[the South] sent to the North $30,000,000 worth of cotton”(Document four). This shows that the south exported lots of cotton to the North. That cotton could be used as resources to make goods or they could sell it for money. $30,000,000 is a lot of money, that money could be used to invest in projects such as railroads, more factories building etc. Also according to the fourth document again, it states “the recorded exports of the South now are greater than the whole exports of the United States in any year before 1856”(Document four). This is showing that the South exported tons of goods which means that they are giving the North some resources. Even though the South has many resources from farms, they are giving it to the North which means that the North is benefiting more because they get to sell the resources and the South won't have that much resources and money because they rely on imported goods and have to pay more tax. The north got a lot of goods worth over several millions of dollars that could be useful and will boost the economy which is highly beneficial to them.
It's clear to say that the North benefited the most from the first American Industrial Revolution from its advantages of having much more railroads built than in the south, having much more factories built than in the south, and having tons of millions of dollars worth of imports from the South. So therefore, The North benefited more than the South in the first American Industrial Revolution.
