The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

Ding will play catalan next game as white and 13th Sicilian as black is my guess. If gets to 14th e4 as white.

I'm staying with Ruy Lopez for the time being, I'm new to chess and it's helpful to have a repeatable pattern against different defenses

Omg if Ian wins or draws the next two matches then he's a champion

When I saw that the video was 10 mins I knew it was a "snooze fest"

Before I could even see the game …

    Agadmator: hello everyone

No one uploads faster than Agadmator!!;) always enjoy your vids:)

This is the fastest game so far.

I think Nepo might regret going for a quick draw with the white pieces.

Wow the speed that you have after these games end

What’s the record for most captures in a row? 🤔

It seems easier to draw ✍️
Game over for Ding I think
    No guts

Seems like all the best moves have been played and the only way to create surprises is to play suboptimal moves like that H3 move we saw earlier (which lead to a loss) and hope that afterward you can find ways to confuse things enough that they make mistakes because they are out of preparation.

#suggestion It would be great to see a series, or at least a few games, from the 1984-85 abandoned World Championship. There doesn't seem to be too much content (recent at least) about this match and I was amazed reading about it recently. There are A LOT of draws (!) but some analysis of some of the better games and some information around how it even came to be a first to six wins rather than best of match would be pretty interesting I think…

WITH OUT THE STRONGEST PLAYER ITS ALL SO BORING

Can you cover a Tal game from the same opening?

Lets go back to the hotel early on this one.

'at least I enjoy seeing they are happy doing it' just killed me 😂

super boring. i have developed a 3 player chess game that i hope to see used in the world championship one day. 2 human players vs alpha zero. the humans would have to initially team up to defeat AZ, then in the aftermath they would have to focus on each other.

Game, set and match. I don't the leak had as much of an impact as Rapport's influence. IMHO a player has his/hers own style, once you deviate you're lost.

Through no fault of Antonio's, this is hands down the least enjoyable agadmator video I've seen.

Rook captures and rook captures and rook captures…….. 😂

There’s something anticlimactic about this world chess championship, knowing that the world’s greatest player is not participating.

it's not silly having a sponsor or chess-loving personality symbolically make the first move. it's very practical. these are the people who are promoting and sponsoring chess. giving them a little piece of the spotlight is a way to reward them and encourage them to continue.

So it was captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures, captures.

Liren saving his best weapon for Game 12: The Ding Cloud!

    Since agadmator gave the PGN of Game 9 in the description Game 11 was: Nepomniachtchi,Ian 2795 – Ding,Liren 2788 [C84] W-chFIDE 40/90 20/60 G/15/+30 Sec (2023), Astana KAZ 2023.04.24 (11) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.d3 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.a3 Na5 9.Ba2 c5 10.Nc3 Be6 11.Bg5 0-0 12.Bxf6 Bxf6 13.Nd5 g6 14.Qd2 Bg7 15.Ng5 c4 16.Nxe6 fxe6 17.Ne3 Bh6 18.Rad1 Rb8 19.dxc4 Nxc4 20.Bxc4 bxc4 21.Qxd6 Qxd6 22.Rxd6 Bxe3 23.fxe3 Rxf1+ 24.Kxf1 Rxb2 25.Rxe6 Rxc2 26.Rxa6 Ra2 27.Rc6 Rxa3 28.Rxc4 Rxe3 29.Kf2 Ra3 30.Rc5 Ra2+ 31.Kf3 Ra3+ 32.Kg4 Ra2 33.Kh3 Re2 34.Rxe5 Kf7 35.Kg3 Kf6 36.Re8 Kf7 37.Re5 Kf6 38.Re8 Kf7 39.Re5 ½–½

Of course, history will put a HUGE asterisk by this WCC because Magus didn't compete. Rightly so.
