00:00 Hello Everyone!

The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

9:00 Watch this part on Chess24. As Ding Liren ran out of time, everybody commenting became hysterical.

Nigel Short flagged Game one against Kasparov in 1993. Now he is happy that he is not the only one to do so.

Ding should’ve played the Kings Indian seeing how he thrives in positions where it’s unclear…

Ding at his best is amazing but seems to let his nerves get the better of him at times.

French defense and then getting flagged… Crazy

This short version is a lot nicer as it makes it a lot easier to follow the game

Oh so Nepo flagged him on time?! HAHA Why is that not normal for Chess Championship? I think I answered my own question but probably because that is a lame way to win a match.

Antonio you don't have to push yourself, pause the recording if necesary, you don't have to use just one take man, take care.

This was the most emotional world's champion game I've ever seen

Playing a French against an expert on the French was risky. Nepo has played some great games with Black in the French

Get well soon, Agad! I don't mind the video being short

Loved it when he said, "A lot of horsing around here." 😁

my heart was hurt when Ding spent like 7 mins in a blunder move in a slightly favorable position for him.
It's like he purposely tried to lose.

at 5:38, can't Ding fork the knight and bishop with pawn to f6?

Don't need apologie agad .. of course we are human beings.. it's common 👍

What the hell is going on here. What happened to the usual spat of draws? A very aggressive match.

Ding is playing right into Nepo's hand. The sharper position the easier it would be for Nepo to win. Magnus has shown everyone that slowplaying is the way to go. I can't understand Ding's strategy for this match, but very much enjoy watching this tactical clash!

Clock is a crucial aspect of the game.
Nepo wouldn't flag him if Ding simply had managed enough time.
He choked hard, tough to watch

I think that the quality of this WCC is one of the worst of the last decade, at least. Lack of preparation from both players, blunder mate in 10 moves and flagging. I hope that FIDE sees this. Yes it was fun to watch but i'm sure that both players would agree with me.

I just feel bad for the championship, y is no one defending like crazy

Let me put it this way. If you cannot handle the pressure of a chess game, you should not be the champion. As well as if you play so poorely with white, you shoudl not win the title either. They are borh extremely strong players but sooo much behind Magnus, Fabi or even Anish or any living former world champ.

Seems more and more Magnus not defending his title is the best thing that happened to chess in recent years …

While we obvsly all appreciate that this WC is not a draw-festival like Fabi Drawruana vs Magnus Drawsen back then, i think its also a sign that this is not chess at a Magnus Carlsen level. Too many small inaccuracies lead to more wins and losses as we have seen in the last WCs together.
Dont get me wrong, i still enjoy the games. But im quite sure Magnus wouldve stomped both of em.

I actually lost my voice after screaming at Ding to MOVE lol, Get well soon man!💖

Ding always struggles with his time management. Feels bad for him

Great upload, thx. Drama! We are talking twist at the end! The broadcast was just crazy, since Ding was winning with 5 mins left to timecontrol. And then…. Nothing! Ding does not move. So Ding spirals downwards and Nepo rises. While nothing happens. "And they say classical chess is ded…" (Nepo at the pressconference)

How exciting to have a WCC that isn't one draw after another…players running out of time, winning with a London, playing H3. GIve me this every time. 🙂

the pieces move so fast 60 fps may not be enough ….

No offense to everyone who is finding this to be an amazingly entertaining match, but all I can think is how much better Magnus is than either of these players. Can you see Magnus melting down like Ding did? Do you see him blowing the games Yan did? Crap, at this point I think you could change the format of the WC to Magnus in a simul vs Yan and Ding and he'd retain his title.

Yes he was in time trouble but Qd3 was a terrible blunder. He could have played Rd5 Rd1 check or even recapturing in e2. It will be very dificult to recover but cheer up Ding. Never give up!!!!

The most laughable World Championship match I've ever witnessed. Game 7 and it stays 4-3. The level of inept is amazing.

Well done, Ian! Experience speaks for itself. We are rooting for you. It’s time to finally bring chess crown home!!

Losing a classical game with flagging is just so unprofessional

A normal World Chess Championship has 90% draws and 10% desitive games. This World Chess Championship has 10% draws and 90% desitive games. It's just crazy.

I don't know by looking at these matches, if one of them win, could they even defend their title in the next WCC?

Both players look so unstable, blunder after blunder…

Can someone explain why Qxd5 was so bad for ding?

Not the quality of play you would expect to see during the WCC.

I'm glad Magnus isn't playing. It would have just been a dry and dull series of draws and grinding endgame wins or total blunders. This championship has been far better than anything else we could have gotten.

I think Dings personality doesnt suit that of a World Champion at this point. Previous champions have been able to withstand pressure and are physically and mentally quite strong enough to handle the demand of such gruesome events and not collapse this way. We are all feeling sorry for Ding and hoping he does well but he cant just keep losing and trying to come back and having to rely so much on his emotion on that day. Ive been rooting for him but for now i think Nepo should just win it. Im tired and drained on his behalf
