The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.
Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

Love the "Bond villain" bit! 🙂
17:00 After seeing DL fail to win being so close, I lean towards Nepo winning this match. This was a perfect chance to tie lost.
One can imagine Ding's reaction in the post-mortem. He's not out of this match because Ding demostrates he can attack strongly, but we are seeing how much better Nepo is at handling pressure. Ding again allowed to much time to drain away and put pressure on himself and lost his winning advantage.
Mind-blowing
I'm tired. But if Nepo manages to grab the tournament I will be disappointed even as a neutral
Who is crazy enough to skip to the end and just see the moves without analysis
I cant belive this he didnt take the rook
If Magnus was playing vs Ian this match would have been over by now (8-0), Ian is making big mistakes and running away with them.
9:41 Sorry not captures with check, in fact captures with mate.
Great content
Watched the whole Live. Nepo never flinched.😅
0:55 Gold finger. 😄😄
Nice recovery. Glad to see you in top form. B form was still good too.
i don't think i'll ever get used to seeing agadmator from this angle
These guys, with all due respect, arent playing good chess they're playing wild chess.
wow
"It's either bad or it works." Very appropriate for Nepo's jedi mind trick

14:59 agadmator asking question to ian 😄
"There is one game where this move was played, but it was between 2 players rated around 2000, so nothing of high caliber"
Me, an 1100: EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!
Thanks!
Game 7 still haunt Ding, if only he calculated further he would know Nepo bluff
that T shirt is definitely a Nezhmetdinov reference.
But i now totally understand magnus, these two are just two lvls behind, not one…
If this were a 24 game match I'd bet on Ding. His play is superior more often. Also, Nepo is a fatso, and his poor physical condition will matter in a longer match. Unfortunately looks like Ding will lose the shorter match
Thank you so much- your analysis deep, clear and makes it very exciting!!
Disappointed. Ding accepted a draw.
you have 5 minutes. Why is your hand shaking
Too much calculating killed the cat..
Press conference after:
Agad: “Nepo—was it bluff?”
Nepo: “hrm, hrmmm, there was no perpetual.” (Translation: YES.)
Ding: Laughs out loud. (Silently: “DAMMIT!!!”)
Disappointed for Ding that he couldn't convert. His confidence after the last two games will not be improved. Is it possible that he's playing the occasion rather than the games, and feeling the pressure as a result?
Ding planned and played r.d2 so quickly that it’s mind-boggling that he didn’t pursue or see the continuation. His killer instinct and endgame mentality have been absolutely shattered by Ian after gm 7. This gm will only further serve to eviscerate those shattered pieces into oblivion, leaving no trace or ability to put them back together again. This match is over. Ding lost this match before a move was ever played, when he so courageously admitted to his vulnerable mental state. Playing such talented players as Ian, who, like water, will find those cracks, leave no stone unturned, and offer no quarter for such a fragile mentality, is a daunting if not insurmountable challenge.
Dam – 2 games in a row where Ding completely outclassed him and he couldn't deal the deal – it's obvious he's a better player but doesn't have the guts – dam- shame
Releasing prep in the middle of the WCC is so awful. I assume it won't affect anything. But it is fucked up.
Funny, how everybody is bashing Ding for not winning this, when even Nepo – maybe the second best player in the world – did not see that Qh4 does not work. Always easy to judge with the rating bar of a strong engine.
Very beatiful, human game!
Excellent analysis👏
Baby don't hurt me
Did anyone else catch James Bond movie reference? Think Agad was referring to Gold Finger movie. 🤣
THIS IS DING's master Plan to confuse IAN , by playing 4-5 games exactly like Lichess then surprise with something else
Both the Players are still quite Young and comparatively much better than their Peers…
They will probably play one more WC as well.. And Ding will benefit a lot from these chess games..
The First WC always hits the nerves.
Was watching this game live and it was absolutely insane! Feel bad for Ding missing such challenging move with Rd3
missing old backgroumd😢
👍
16:58 From a human perspective it's really hard to calculate all the lines that ultimately guarantees white absolute safety, one wrong move and it could be the end for white. Ding's decision to choose the safer path when he seemingly has the advantage is a wise one.
This WC is a joke
Ding doesn't seem to handle pressure well. :/
Game of throws
Ding should’ve had this one 😅
agad you're late!
Do you know that Nepo has answered your tweet in the PC regarding whether Qh4 was a bluff or not? @agadmator
#suggestion I know you have your hands full with the WCC right now, but I cannot help but suggest that you cover a game by Leonid Stein, a less spoken of but very skilled player that I don't think you have a game of up yet 🙂
