The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

Dingˋs strongest opponent is DGT 3000.

Ding just doesn't seem to have the guts for it.

I love how agad stopped a second after saying "Hello everyone welcome to an incredible"……Game?! 😂😂

Can't wait for game 9. I think Ding is slowly adapting himself to Ian style and he will finally have him.

“This is not the rook you are looking for” – Obi Ian Kenobi

This is exactly like the WCC previously where Nepo made mistakes and Magnus took advantage of it

Nepo-Wan Kenobi showed us why you should believe in the force.

Really good summary in the Just the Moves section!

I watched a lot of the livestream but I still watched this video because your style is so fun to watch!

Does anybody think Magnus wouldn't convert these chances? The series has been entertaining like a demolition derby. Magnus matches are entertaining because he's driving F1.

Although the game ended in a draw, it really felt like a Ding loss rather than a Nepo win. If I’ve not miscalculated, Nepo now only needs to draw the remaining games to win the match and the championship, which seems like a lot of pressure is now on Ding’s shoulders — and with the black pieces — to try and salvage his position. Maybe this is where Ian’s previous experiences will work in his favour, but I would not want to write off any player with Ding’s god-tier ability to calculate such sharp lines. It’s not over yet, but I do slightly favour the candidate for FIDE!

Wow what a game from ding and defence from nepo…

Ding had at least three huge opportunities to put Nepo away, and blew all of them. This is not World Champion level chess, it's awful. I bet Carlsen is laughing so hard right now. And Kasparov is probably crying.

Nepo has the dubious distinction of playing the "MOST" accurate(against carlsen) and the "LEAST" accurate game in world chess championship.

Hi agad, I'm new to chess and i was curious about the Qxf6 written on your shirt… Is there something special about queen capturing on f6?

I stopped watching after Ding found rD2. The evaluation bar basically said white couldn't lose. Yet somehow, Ding found a way to not convert after a beautiful opening and middle game. Nepo played admirably, not taking anything away from him but it should be 4 – 4 right now.

That gentel man should have played the first move of an armagedon

Ding is certainly the most annoying player in the history of chess. How can one self-destruct like this? Make beautifully constructed games and end up screwing it all up

Rapport is being paid by Nepo.Ding is a choker anyway, I said before Ding is done.

The second game in a row, which Ding chokes away. I feel so awful for him, hope he maintains his composure and continues to fight back

If Magnus had to play both of these two in a Simul, 14 game match for the World Championship, he would win. Both players have made so many errors that Magnus would capitalize on. It is clear that the winner will be WC, but Magnus is still, by far, the better player. He's a machine…

Sorry 2000 players, we're just not that into you.

Qh4 might be the greatest bluff in (recent) chess history. The line was so insane and Nepo sold it so well that Ding was almost forced to buy it. Remember Ding didn't have engine, so he could only know that Kd1 would lead to an equal position if he saw the Knight sac on d4 (he missed a similar idea later on in the game). Maybe Ding thought Kd1 was a safer, more practical way to play for the win. Though ofc w/o last game perhaps he would've taken 10mins to double check everything and go for the winning line

This right after the starship launch. What a day!

What a great game from Ding. Bad luck he didn’t convert but he is definitely know how to make a favorable position to himself

I'm too early here, gonna come back in few hours lol

As much as I want Ding to win the WCC, Ian is much better than him Imo, at least when it comes to psychology.

What is the point of someone else other than the player making the first move? I don't get it

The guy making the first move makes Tony Soprano look like a girl guide.

Open fight. Both boxers refuse to play in defense and prefer punching each other aggressively. After 3-4 such rounds, next rounds will proliferate with inaccuracies and empty swings compared with the defensive match, but will be more entertaining to watch.

Qh4 should earn Nepo the title of bluffmaster

Ive finally achieved to like before 100. My life is complete.
