The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

Agadmator adds so much to some of the most exciting World Chess Championship games – Thanx

I think Rapport is leaking the info to nepo. I dont know anything about them and is just judging them by their looks.

Teddy says the next variation is the deepest move…

Very exciting game! Sad that Ding didnt capitalize the advantage.

I think this is Nepo's match to lose. Why?

    1. Prior experience in a world championship, against Magnus no less.
    2. A long legacy of Russian champions and national support to back him up.
    3. He seems quite relaxed, whereas Ding seems rather nervous.
    4. (At the moment) A one-game lead, with six games (at most) to go.

Agadmator: The guy who made the ceremonial e4 first move looks like a Bond villain.
Me: If he had played e3 instead he would look like a Bong villain.

Ding play so well but …..ah the key move ….!!!

Those who are here just for the move summary are the same people who would watch "The Usual Suspects" — but only the last ten minutes. Shame on you!

Nic (J Bruce Feynman Niccolo P. Bentulan) says:

2nd comment:  2016 WCC – This is relevant to the 2023 WCC.

Please agad cover either of the decisive games of the Sergey Karjakin vs Magnus Carlsen 2016 WCC (Games 8 and 10, preferably Game 8 since Magnus lost). #suggestion

What happened is that Magnus lost to Sergey AS WHITE in Game 8 but then compensated for a white loss with A WHITE WIN in Game 10. This is what happened to Ding Liren & Nepo for Games 2 & 4 of the 2023 WCC.

Fun fact for Game 8 – 'After the game Carlsen was visibly uncomfortable and left the press conference before it began, potentially incurring a fine of 5% of his prize money to the organizers Agon, and a further 5% to FIDE.[59] FIDE released a statement the following day indicating that the penalty would be imposed.[61] The fine was reduced on appeal to 5% of the prize money (2.5% to Agon and 2.5% to FIDE).[62]'

For Game 10: Wesley So has some interesting thoughts that DEFY STOCKFISH, as Wesley So did in 2021 St Louis Chess 9LX with the move that won the chessc*m 2021 move of the year award. (Wesley So thinks white 'still had an edge' even though the computer says black is slightly winning.)

    Some maths:
Why doesn't a drawn match go to the player w/ more black wins (if any) s.t. Sergey Karjakin not Magnus Carlsen is 2016 WCC? Surely a black win is worth more than a white win. But you might argue 2 draws with black amounts to a win with black. Does it? No question about it in chess960, where there's no theory. In chess? Gestalt psychology says the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

    Other suggestions:

    Women's chess
A – Was Kg6 in Dina's 1st GM slaying game in Reykjavik sexism? Like looking down on Dina?
    B – Anna Cramling's dad beats Mikhail Tal. #suggestion
C – Philippine women's chess #suggestion – WGM Janelle Frayna, the female Wesley So, upset Georgian GM (really GM not just WGM) Bela Khotenashvili at the 2022 world blitz.

    There's a 13-move UNDERPROMOTION puzzle here.

    [Variant "From Position"]
    [FEN "6k1/6b1/1p1P3p/6pP/3pPpP1/p2NqP2/6K1/5Q2"]

    1. Qd1 a2 2. Qb3+ Kf8 3. d7 Qe2+ 4. Nf2 Ke7 5. Qd5 Kd8 6. Qe6 Bf6 7. Qe8+ Kc7 8. Qc8+ Kd6 9. e5+ Qxe5 10. d8=R+ Bxd8 11. Qxd8+ Kc6 12. Qa8+ Kb5 13. Qxa2

For some reason none of the Philippine channels except Kelvinllovejr even cover this game. LOL. But Janelle did cover the game where e drew against Nemo, so maybe Janelle will cover this game later on.

P.S. Please help get Wesley So on Lex Fridman's podcast. See

"Looks like a Bond villain" lmao!!!

Agad put this video out too fast, not as good as usual on the analysis

I was laughing at “under 2000 – nothing of high calibre” 😂 but then remembered my own rating 😢😢 5:33

Poor Ding seems to be under a lot of pressure. His time usage hasn't been the best and while he's a very talented player he's also too slow. I'd say Nepo's got this championship in the bag if things continue to go this way, since the further it gets the pressure is going to take it's toll on Ding.

9:52 "where white would be a…(shit i forgot to evaluate this position) "

…and at this point, Ian is out of Ding's preparation…

nepo must be extremely thankful for the draw and ding must be pissed at himself lol

    at 13:46
isn't white queen on e4 capturing pawn on e5 checkmate in 2? (someone tell me i am wrong)

If Carlsen hadn't stepped down, the championship would not have been as exciting

Feels like ding is the better player with higher potential, but Nepo has more routine and better nerves

Qh4 was bluff – Ding was low on time – and the time to calculate that it is not a perpetual is long – and Ding may hve been traumatised by his time problems. As a matter of fact, he played his move 40 with 4 seconds left. Nepo playsed a mind game, as Agadmator mentions.

World #3 chess player Super GM Ding Liren doesn't find winning move in minutes

Agad: expects us to find the winning move in a few seconds

Won the last game by flagging. Saved this game by bluffing.

Ding has some brilliant ideas and forethought but can not run the marathon.

Oo please Ding don’t freeze 😂😂😂😂

I don't think I've ever seen in a bluff played at this level of chess

This has been a very interesting championship. However, I don't think either one of them would have beaten Magnus. It's disappointing that Magnus decided not to defend his title. Whichever one of these two excellent players wins the title, he will always carry the stigma of "Yeah, but he wouldn't have beaten Magnus." That is unfortunate for whoever wins.

I find that sometimes the real beauty in a chess game is not only the moves that are played, but also the threat of the moves that aren't played. Love the way you explore different lines in a position.

    αστεριος αστειεριος says:

    Too much drawama!

My theory: There is no preparation leak.
Those were actually games played by alt account of Nepo and Ding, training, because the entire championship is scripted. And thats why they were played online.
Thats why we are getting so unreal funny, interesting games 🙂

Can’t help but get the feeling that Magnus would dust both of these guys

Qh4 is the Tal bite ur cigar and light it and blow smoke into opponents face uber bluff move. Wow just wow. Luv u agad

If Nepo wins tomorrow its practically over. 2 game lead is too

Ding shouldnt be in the championship. Weak and slow.

I think it’s cool you do a section of just the moves. Your commentary is great, but I do get lost on the past few moves more often than I’m gonna admit.

I can't get 5 minutes in without trying out one of these openings. Sorry for not watching the whole thing. I just get lost in playing

Qh4 – white to move – is like a 3500 rated puzzle rush puzzle lol

Seeing this, Who needs Carlsen now with his boring positional chess! Great games and a smart trick of Nepo! Ding doesn't give up and can turn the tide. Absolute entertainment of a match! Thanks erveryone who provide these beauty, you too Agad!
