The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

Ding always overcalculated so he always threw the game

This is my favorite world championship game so far, the other ones were a bit too positional for my tastes.

It was only 2000's so nothing high caliber 😅😅😅😅😅😢

Too Bad I was hoping Ding would win this Game if I’m correct he had lost game 7 and did not play well but knowing he was going to have White in this Game I was pretty sure he was going to come back and play very strongly which he did and as you pointed out had he taken that free Rook there was a good possibility he would’ve have won this Game Thanks Much Antonio

"Looks like a bond villain" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

THIS VIDEO IS AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER

Antonio, the game was "incredible" only because of its terrible level… what are they, 1600 rated players? It appears so, today.

Everyone is acting like this game was devastating for Ding, but I think it would be way worse if he never had any winning chances. He had Nepo on the ropes twice, so he clearly will have plenty more opportunities in the next six games.

This isn't the chess era of a couple decades ago where everything was a draw and wins were so rare that a single decisive game early on determined the match. Ding historically tends to get stronger deeper into the match as well, so we still have a long way to go.

Some of these engine lines are just… completely insane.

Very sharp game, one small mistake could make you lose on the spot

In a funny kind of way I am glad Magnus is not playing. Now every game is an exciting game.

Ding is mentally weak , Fisher would have beaten him just by staring at him .

Omg i'm literally at the edge of my seat about to fall off! What a game!

Wait how is it 4-3 on game 8 wasn't there a couple draws

Edit nevermind i know why i forgot each get .5 for draws

Why nobody talking about this NEZHMETDINOV tshirt??

Get well soon! Thanks for another enjoyable an insightful video.

I was SHOCKED when Ding didn’t take the Rook. But, it’s all good at least he didn’t get flagged again.

Haven’t been up to date on my chess knowledge… can someone explain why this is called “world chess championship match” if Carlson is the world champion? Is this match to determine who faces Carlson?

From the comments, hard to find Nepo supporters. Let's not mix subjects… this is chess.

someone got the “Qxf6” shirt reference?

I dont understand how does leaking prep give or take the edge. It is not poker with folded cards. Everyone can explore every move specially with pc. I mean ,even if the players emailed each other their exact moves they are bout to play, they can both analyze them and end in a draw, or play with a 0.00 evaluation untill the leaked moves and after that over the board.

Nepo pulled a Magnus on Ding with Qx4.

    Worst championship tournament ever

I like how his shirt is the famous queen sacrifice by nezhmetdinov

Neither one of them deserves to be called World champion, hopefully the new up and coming generation of players will do better
    Thank you for the video

Can we name this opening the "Dingaling"

You didn't mention that you managed to ask Nepo a question directly (well, sort of, it was read during the conference as one of the questions from Twitter) and that he sort-of confirmed it was a bluff – he said that at first he thought it was a brilliant move, but after further calculation he realised that the king can escape perpetual check and his position is ugly, but that it turned out to be a good practical move.

Never knew chess had such intense psychological warefare involved. Poor Ding.

That rook to d3 move is so pretty because it makes it possible to go to h3 AND have your bishop covering h3 when you slide over to attack the queen

@:59 you say he looks like a Bond villain, I say he looks like he could be the husband of professor Umbridge from Harry Potter.. just straight up menacing looking.. that or he missed the casting call for Dr. Robotnic in Sonic..

Ding dropped the ball on this game, he had it. Unlucky.

If some of you are wondering, his shirt Qxf6 refers to the game of Rashid Nezhmetdinov vs Oleg Chernikov, one of the greatest queen sacrifice ever, maybe the best, of course Agadmator has a video about the game 🙂 https://youtu.be/G90SVhxKeig

Nepo is like the quarterback that does great and you just know is going to screw up somehow. After watching his blunders with Magnus im not convinced the rook was a bluff. I think hes a space cadet.

Nepo is literally taking Ding by the hand into a deep dark forest where 2+2=5 and the path leading out is only wide enough for Nepo. #MikhailTalReborn.

The Jews of fide wont even let the Russian flag be displayed for Nepo

Congratulations on the excellent Fide question.

Finally, an exciting world championship match!! Gooo Nepooo!!

Thanks for short version. In an out in less than a minute
