World champion* pretty weird that the champion is the third best player in the world, and light years behind Magnus. So is he champion? Technically. But he’s no Magnus.
This has proven to be an incredible championship, and I need to congratulate the two of them for playing it down to the wire and playing interesting Chess throughout instead of this devolving into a string of Berlin's and draws.
Heartbroken for Ian because it got all the way to a rapid game to decide.
This has been the most exciting and back and forth championship in years, and not just the match the crazy story of how they got here.
Levy you should do a recap of the whole event end-to-end because it was a crazy story.
From the Pandemic, to players dropping out or being excluded from the candidates due to the war in Ukraine, to Magnus dropping out, to Ding's incredible 'China still cool' month long tournament fest under partial lockdown to qualify to play, Hikaru qualifying for the candidates in an upset while getting revenge on a kid streamer who called him a has-been. How the event didn't even have a location or sponsor till the last minute. Ding's prep being leaked half way through. It's been a great story.

That was like the most exciting 10 minutes of chess ever in that last game. When all of the commentators were convinced of a draw I started to get up and do something in the kitchen, then someonen screamed, and I came back. I had to rewatch it again right after it finished to see how it came down again.

Honestly I didnt root and cheer anyone in a chess match, but the end where Nepo lost, the devastating face he carried with me having a flashback of previous championship, made me cry 🙁
Not like he deserves or not as, but seeing him ruined was so heartbreaking
Anyway, congrats Ding for becoming the New World Chess Champion and I hope Nepo will comeback next year 💪
