I don't know how to feel about this entire World Championship in general. Of course it's sad that Magnus didn't want to defend his title, but I think being World Champion and Best not being the same is nothing unique to Chess.
However just looking at the match I have to say the games were really exciting, there's no doubt about that. Yet I can't shake the feeling – yes I'm merely 1000 rated player and don't know nothing about anything – that the quality of the games was just off. I mean, it's exciting to see decisive games, but from my understanding at the highest level Chess is supposed to be won on small margins or exceptional play and some of the games didn't feel like that for me. Again, I don't understand Chess on that level, but somehow the mistakes made by both players just feel like a serious downgrade from not only Magnus but also other players like Fabiano.
Furthermore Ding winning is even more unsettling for me, as his way towards the Championship just looks unnatural to me, with 30 games to push his qualification, Magnus not playing as another coincidence in his favor and some players in the candidates going for the risky no.1 spot instead of hoping that second will be enough.
Congratulations for Ding, but I was rooting for Nepos redemption to the last move.
