If ever there was an argument against AI, it's Torch. Not because it's absolutely brutal, but because it's a dick about it.
To fairly compare bots with chess clocks, set a defined power consumption (like 1W), if a bot uses more energy convert it into exrra time spent . For example, using 100W for 0.5s is 50J of energy, equal to 50s at 1W .
Some of this is more so up to Torch being given more hardware resources, but it's still undeniable that immense amount of work went into the project. However, this is still a dangerous development in the chess world, for if the greatest chess engine becomes proprietary, we can certainly expect a lack of reproducibility, monopolization and pay-walling of analysis tools, and unfair advantages over smaller players with less hardware or no money to throw at world's top chess engine devs. Torch must be ether independently evaluated by a third party and be released or be torched for the greater good…
