He saw the rook check and the continuation from there. When playing Be1 he saw the ensuing rook skewer from black but he missed that black could have played Kf8 and a5 disallowing his bishop check.

Hikaru saw all of that after taking with the rook instead of sliding the bishop back. He rejected Be1 (even though he felt it is the strongest move) because he felt the position is somewhat unclear. He was afraid of Qd7 and spent 20 minutes calculating around that move.
This candidates is nuts.

What an exciting set of tournaments! I'm enjoying these recaps thoroughly. Really glad you're showing all the games and not skipping relatively uneventful draws (though there hasn't been that many of those really). So glad both the open and women's is being held at the same time. And both are putting on a great show! Is it possible that both could end in ties for first? How would they decide? Is there a fast format playoff procedure, or is it determined by some formula or who beat who earlier, etc?

Qd7 move is instructive. When you have a winning position look for moves that'll grow your advantage even further. more especially if the move is as obvious as that knight takes rook move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
