In video games and in card games there is a term to refer to trendy strongest ideas. We call it META, and varies depending on what is crazy busted at the time and what new things are added. Chess is not unique in the concept, but is cool to watch how it changes naturally in this non changing rule environment.

its called the METAGAME or meta in short.
football does it. league of legends does it. chess has been doing it for longer than any other game i assume.
its how a game with fixed rules or only undergoing minor changes evolves over time.
im sure boxers do it as well, changing from lean bros with quick punches to wear you down to allrounders and the stocky heavy hitters who try to land one combo to knock you out.
one great example is the knuckle ball in base ball.
a knuckle ball is when you grip the ball with the outer side of your fingers, which can make the ball fly wonky.
but if you learn how to knuckle ball, you need to put most of your time into that. so you can only throw good knuckle balls.
as long as there are almost no knuckle ball players, the others will struggle with too little practise facing knuckle balls, so the strategy is good.
if theres too many, knucke balls are practised more against so they lose more often.
the meta changes constantly.
