The Scotch Game is a popular opening choice for White, especially among amateur players. It occurs after the opening moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4.

It’s known for its aggressive nature, aimed at challenging Black in the center while opening lines for both bishops and actively involving the queen. If you’re not cautious, you can quickly find yourself in a difficult position.

After 3…exd4 4.Nxd4, one common but flawed response from Black is to capture the knight with 4…Nxd4. By continuing this trade in the center 5.Qxd4, it leads to White occupying the center and enjoying more space and activity. Sadly, more than 18 million chess players have made this opening mistake.

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a better approach to counter the Scotch Game as Black.

Happy birthday, Igor! I really enjoy your unassuming style of teaching. You explain everything clearly.

At 4:49 After Qxc3 you could have shown what happens after Bd4? Black has mate!

you like bishop opening so much ☺☺

It looks very simple in your vedios , but it will become really tough in execution. Thanks for your teachings

Happy birthday GM 🎉🎁 you teach me lot Thank you so much 😍

After I saw your videos, I wish I had seen these several years back. Best of teachings.

    Can you do something on I think it's called Urusanov gambit is E4 e5 Ng3 nf6 Bc4

can you comment on how to handle the Goring Gambit
    Thanks

Hi sir Igor, Wishing you many more candles to blow and chess openings to share! I enjoy watching your channel.

Happy belated birthday Igor! Hope you had a great birthday and thank you for your great videos! Huge fan! 🇬🇧

I much prefer playing 3… d6 against the Scotch, as it prevents the Scotch and Goring Gambits. If they play the best move, 4. d5, then black should respond with 4… Ne7. From here, the plan for black should be f5, Nf6, g6, Bg6, O-O, and then create a kingside attack like in the Leningrad Dutch Defense.

If white plays 4. dxe5, then black should play 4… Bg4. Then we reach a fork in the road. If white plays 5. exd6, then we transpose to an Englund Gambit with 5… Bxd6. If white develops, though, with a move like 5. Nc3, then black can trade queens with 5… dxe5 6. Qxd8+ Rxd8 or keep queens on the board with 5… Bxf3 6. Qxf3 dxe5.

    Great show….very informative and inciteful.

    thanks again daer coach! But how we have to react if 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Bc4…?

Can you do a video on the dutch defense? Preferably the leonagrad dutch. Thank you!!

The "mistake" is called Ghulam Kassim variation. Believe it or not, you can win games with it. 😉

Awesome video. Beel looking for this tutorial.

Happy Birthday my FAVORITE Igor !! you are Super !♟🥂♟

Time for White to switch to Checkers. Bwahahaha! Best punchline yet! Happy Birthday! Many happy returns…

    I love this fact.❤
    Beginners in…

    Game: play queen's blowjob ❤😂.

"It's time for white to switch to checkers" 🥶

Am stuck at 1800 to 1900,what could I be doing wrong

Freid Leming, Worlds Rootin'est Tootin'est Milkman says:

My mistake was not resigning on the first move.

getting a scholars mate in the scotch game would be a very… throbbing way to win

Happy Birthday, Igor! You are a very charismatic chess teacher here on YT. There are many choices for us but you have oone of my absolute favorite chess channels and I am happy to see how much it grew to almost half a million subscribers

    Happy Birthday 🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾

I might forget opening lines, tactics and endgamepatterns but something that will always stick with me is "You certainly do not want to take his Queen, you want to take his soul" Followed by a casual "It is just time for white to switch to checkers"

And yes you didn't age. In the past 10 years. Still you are my Number 1 "online" chess teacher. ❤🎉

Hey , Igor , plz reply ! What about Qxc7 there at 7:45 ? You did not cover that !! I think I am losing in that case

To “Take is a mistake” is a silly saying. To capture is a core principle but to take is a mistake? Just because it rhymes doesn’t mean it makes any sense.

    Happy (Belated) Birthday Igor! 🎉

Best Chess teacher on YT and we’re all very grateful for these lessons =]

“Its time for white to switch to checkers” 😂
