The Scotch Game is a popular opening choice for White, especially among amateur players. It occurs after the opening moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4.

It’s known for its aggressive nature, aimed at challenging Black in the center while opening lines for both bishops and actively involving the queen. If you’re not cautious, you can quickly find yourself in a difficult position.

After 3…exd4 4.Nxd4, one common but flawed response from Black is to capture the knight with 4…Nxd4. By continuing this trade in the center 5.Qxd4, it leads to White occupying the center and enjoying more space and activity. Sadly, more than 18 million chess players have made this opening mistake.

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a better approach to counter the Scotch Game as Black.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a Scotch game against anyone on my level in like months.. happy b-day and yes, you seem to look the same as you did years ago when I first saw some of your courses

HI COACH! Can I make a request?

Hi Igor, at 2:30 (and all other similar cases), why do we recapture the knight with the pawn, and not with the queen?

In 5.Be3 after Qg6 what if they play Bd3?

Happy birthday sir 🎉 big fan from 🇮🇳🇮🇳

I love playing Qh4. For some reason most white players don't know theory after the early queen attack in the Scotch game.

Can you make a video on creating weaknesses?

Thanks! The Scotch game is very dangerous for black and now I know how to handle it!

    4) Qd4 can also get very tricky, many 2200s lose to that as well. Kindly make a video on that variation as well

Some of your opponents will notice this JUICY pawn on a7, but you upset them once again with queen d2 mate in one
