A brief history of chess – Alex Gendler

Trace the storied history of the game of chess, from its origins in 7th century India to the computer software we use today.

The attacking infantry advances, their elephants already having broken the defensive line. The king tries to retreat, but the enemy flanks him from the rear. Escape is impossible. This isn’t a real war— nor is it just a game. Over the 1,500 years of its existence, chess has been known as a military strategy tool, a metaphor for human affairs and a measure of genius. Alex Gendler shares its history.

Let me make a game about my brother dying

Bobby Fischer was the first major headache to the Soviet Chess establishment, not IBM. But anyway…

To me the biggest flaw in chess is the inability of the pawn to move in any direction except forward. They are the foot soldiers of the board and could be used more strategically if allowed to move as foot soldiers actually do.

The treadmill is still a Torture device!

The Mongolian version seems to be more interesting.

Skip right over Bobby Fisher, really??? Stalin used to airbrush people he wanted forgotten out of photographs, like Nikolai Yezhov. George Orwell had a term for this; down the "Memory Hole" of history.

I like how youtube videos can actually teach better than average teachers, especially Ted Ed

"A relevently advisor was recast as a more powerful queen"
    damn.

When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team – and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

Pawn and pawn: stare at each other as they can’t move
My pawn: Hey pawn we should play pattycake until we can eat something

Wow, i did not know that Arabic rulers were hardcore gamers

This video is not good since it missed to many basic elements of The History of Chess

The fame of Go wasn’t created from chess, this is very poor research. Igo is so much older than chess, in fact it is the oldest game known to history and it dates back to 2,500 BC – 4,000 BC.

chess origin is from mahabharat epic..u didn't tell that

They had so many fanmade Chess games of their own culture that all came down to the last update. Can I still play those versions?

Chess as we know it now is a Southern European codification. There is a Northern European version which is played until 1800's with a 12 x 8 board. Shoji has many historical variants that have larger boards, largest of which played on 36 x 36 board. The Chinese version Xiangqi currently has the largest board with size 9 x 10, and a unique piece called Pao "canon" that moves orthbonally and captures by jumping.

"The queen perhaps inspired by the recent surge of strong female leaders"

And then, it turns into Jojo

why does almost every male narrator sound identical

Are you ashamed to say that chess was invented in 🇮🇳india

Chess is chauvinist, if the king dies the game is over. It should be the queen the most important piece 😆

I've watched this 5 times and i still get it recommended

in the Arab reign we call the Queen "Minister" haha

Chess is my favourite board game so I just want to learn about the history of it

Thanks to this, i’m really into chess now

This guy says suposedly this is how it happened. Wheres the facts and it did evolve as everything does thos giy even says it
