What an ego, the english speaking people! "chess" in english doesn't comme from "sha" directly. Chess commes from "echecs" (french), that commes from "ajedrez" (arabic spanish), that certainly commes from a persian word…

Thought this would be good watch as only know a little about chess history and thought would be good from TED but then I hear advisor changed to queen in 15th century. Well chess sets discovered on Isle of Lewis in Scotland have queens and dated back to 12th century so only about 300 years out.

Where's China in this conversation? The Xiangqi predates the Shogi but they're totally different games. In fact, Korea has its own version called Janggi which originally came from China 400 years ago. Shogi was introduced in Japan from Korea, but the original Korean version disappeared. There is a clear "genetic" relationship between western chess and Chinese chess (not shogi). The Chinese version has soldiers (pawns), Horses (Knights), Chariots (rooks), Elephants (bishops) and Generals (Kings). Even the moves are basically the same.
