A brief history of chess – Alex Gendler

Trace the storied history of the game of chess, from its origins in 7th century India to the computer software we use today.

The attacking infantry advances, their elephants already having broken the defensive line. The king tries to retreat, but the enemy flanks him from the rear. Escape is impossible. This isn’t a real war— nor is it just a game. Over the 1,500 years of its existence, chess has been known as a military strategy tool, a metaphor for human affairs and a measure of genius. Alex Gendler shares its history.

I have said this before, I will say it again. Chess wasn't invented in India in 7th century. It was there in India in 2400 BCE, that's 3000 years earlier

15th you say ? Around the same time as the King James Bible ?

It’s clearly a lunar and solar calendar with lots of encoding with the name of each character now that the Christians got a hold of it

Still waiting for Gary Chess to release Chess 2.
It should happen any day now, guys!

Prince's mom: Show me how he got killed!! cries insanely loud
Prince's brother: It looks like I could use the power of the Ashtapada board and give birth to chess… or as I call it Caturanga

"So let me explain how the defendant's brother died

Chess in Europe was played first by Charlemagne, and his friendship and diplomatic relation with Syrian King Harum-al-Raschid.

The game of chess was created by mandodari
    The wife of Ravana

So from India, it travelled to Persia(Iran), then after Arab conquest of Persia, Arabs learnt about the game. From them, it slowly spread to Europe and Central Asia. Chaturanga(Sanskrit) became Chatraanj(Arabic) and then Chess(English). It also had a different route where it spread to South East Asia and China and eventually Japan. Shikamaru from Naruto used to be a master of Japanese version of this game.

Just like every other invention, others always take credit of our Indian inventions. This time it was Arabs and persians

Fascinating history of Chess indeed! Love the Cleverly Animated parody to tell this engaging tutorial! 🕯🌷🌿

the thing i love about chess is that the shear amount of possible games outweighs atoms in the observable universe.

I think Starcraft: Brood War can last 1000 years.

The puffy millennium randomly spare because seed cytochemically suspect below a obedient fly. annoyed, humorous paste

i was today years old when i understood the meaning of the phrase ," iski toh SHAAMAT aayi hai"

The one who invented the chess must've been very intelligent, because chess really illustrates how life is. You know how to play chess then you should know how to play life. For example a soldier can beat a horse, a horse is so powerful but a soldier HAS to beat the horse with the horse weakness which is to be close to it. Now let's reflect it to boxing for example. For the best boxer, he/she has to get closer to the opponents so they can use the power to defeat them. Chess is a life example played on board, which teaches someone how to act in real life. How to do certain actions that they will win even with many losses. Thus by that, anyone would find their weaknesses and strengths so it will be easier for them to move forward.

0:40 are we just gonna ignore the fact that white's not even in mate? I mean yeah anyone would have conceded at that point but still.

what you call queen a strong female… we call it general or minister a strong male…

I can see robots are often smarrter than humans

I deeply wonder about the deliberate audacity of TED-Ed to not mention about the Country of ORIGIN of Chess – INDIA! Not even a single mention. No wonder about the American roots of the Company.

Even snake and ladders was invented in India

Chess is like Starcraft, despite having no longer balancing in the game after years it was made it still holds up as a great strategy game.

    Mongolia
Chess is recorded from Mongolian-inhabited areas, where the pieces are now called:

King: Noyon – Ноён – lord
Queen: Bers / Nohoi – Бэрс / Нохой – dog (to guard the livestock)
Bishop: Temē – Тэмээ – camel
Knight: Morĭ – Морь – horse
Rook: Tereg – Тэрэг – cart
Pawn: Hū – Хүү – boy (the piece often showed a puppy)

    Soviet: "Total Chess Domination"
US: "Well, our friend here has something to say"
    Bobby Fischer: "Knight H5"
    US and Soviet: 👀

Even after watching this video 3 times I still don’t know how chess works…

1:40 it’s a bit tricky to translate but it’s also from arabic and it actually means ’the elderly person (the king) is dead’
Arabic is tricky to translate lol

Chess was invented by sindhu civiz around 3000bc years ago.

This video is wrong on one take queen isn't important piecie king is and reason for changing advisor for queen is not from strong female but for cosmetic one

3:00 Ooh!That explains why we call that Vertically Moving piece "The Bishop"
