In wild fires they often burn areas in front of the approaching wildfire to remove fuel to stop it. I don't know for sure if that's where the cliché comes from, but its a thing.

Not a firefighter but I am aware of what they do. You can do controlled burns to limit the movement of a fire by restricting the fuel it needs to spread which is by definition fighting a fire with fire

Yes, you can actually fight fire with fire. In the case of forest fires, you burn down some parts of the forest intentionally so that the initial fire doesn't spread out too far to the point that it's irreversible damage

The idea of literally fighting fire with fire is that you set a fire to burn down all the fuel for the other fire at a particular point, to create a barrier the other fire cannot cross. If you control the fire you set properly, you can extinguish it once it finishes burning what you want it to, and everything on the other side of the burn line / perimiter / etc. from the main fire will be protected.
