Why does he not want to go to reddit
The cheater was an idiot. If Hikaru were supposed to follow engine advice for some project, he would refuse to make the b5 move just on principle, and would try later engine moves that at least were not completely crazy. This cheater did not even have the brains to skip an engine move that just alerted any observer to possible cheating. Hey cheaters, you can win without having to use every engine move!
WHY WOULD HIKARU SAY GREAT GAME WHEN A PLAYER WAS CHEATING? THIS IS THE PROBLEM GM LIKE HIKARU STILL THINKS THE GAME IS ENTERTAINING – CHEATING IS DESTROYING CHESS AND HIKARU DOESNT CARE BECAUSE HES MAKING MONEY BY NOT MAKING A BIG ISSUE OUT OF THE CANCER OF CHEATING. HIKARU DOESNT REALLY CARE IF PEOPLE ARE CHEATING UNLESS ITS AGAINST HIM.

This just screams 'cheat at chess until you're caught' because this guy essentially got away with it. He keeps his tournament winnings and nothing of merit is lost by him except he's known as a cheater who got paid.
Won't be long b4 ilenses become contact lenses, brain interfces, cyborgs, AI bots that can pass for humsns and designer babies are real possibilities… what then?

Dude stole over 40M (known, prob more unknown) with UB in poker and didn't have to return any money. It's not shocking.

Can someone explain how does a person cheat using their phone in a OTB game lol? Isn't it obvious that you're looking at the phone?
Too bad they can't record every board from overhead and players from each side because video cameras are incredibly expensive and would need to be replaced at every single tournament!
Maybe you can't catch a cheater in real-time, but you can later re-view every game they played! But I'd bet a super GM could verify 16 games in split-screen; just as long as he's beered up!

Glad to see hikaru alireza problem has been resolved. Apologizing just makes him a bigger person. I hope hikaru recognises Alireza's win and appreciate it. He is still the beast of chess.

This is very false. Statistics are an extraordinarily valid method for catching cheaters, and is used to catch cheaters in everything from video game speedrunning to major financial fraud.
I sat next to him when he was caught at the Chicago open he was a 2000 playing in the u2100 for clarification
Amateur players should not win prize money, GMs struggle to compete against each others for prize money while a 1500 can win $5000. Stupid.

You know your law system is fucked when you have to fear naming the person who has been proven (unlike the Hans Niemann case) to have cheated because they could sue you. That's outright crazy, like "oh yeah, I did violate the fair play agreement but if you say that I did you're going to lose money". Where is the freedom of speech to address the wrong things someone has done.
There are cameras streaming all of my 11 year oldโs basketball games but we canโt do that at chess tournaments? ๐คฆ๐ป FIDE should be ashamed
The fact that the player probably gets to keep his money makes this very interesting. I'm afraid that this incident may encourage people to try to cheat over the board.

i found a person that modified both of my nintendo switches on reddit in my country, shipped them literally to one end of my country, were with him for a week, shipped back perfectly as expected and modified. found him on reddit, only communicated on reddit and whatsapp.

Many many years ago (in the context of a high level cheating scandal in Bridge), Edgar Kaplan claimed it was impossible to cheat against a top player without him being aware. He might not know the mechanics of the cheating, but the tempo and body language would just ring so many alarm bells. Most specifically they;d be thinking at the "wrong" time. Feels sort of on point — when a player can't explain the ideas behind excellent moves.
But then I'm reminded of the story of a post-mortem between Robert Byrne and Bisguier. (Both GMs but Byrne was much stronger) Bisguier won. In the post-mortem Byrne admired all of the subtle themes and threats Bisguier had — forcing him to create weaknesses that Bisguier was able to exploit. Bisguier hadn't seen any of the ideas that Byrne felt compelled to defend against.
