at my second ever chess tournament, both my opponent and myself didn’t really know what en passant was, so we both just en passanted like any piece that was on the 4/5 rank and next to a pawn

Software engineer here. No, chess engines does not beat humans because, or rather, only because, they run on powerful servers and they can calculate every possible move, they beat us using artificial intelligence. They basically have trained inside their memory all the patterns you talk about earlier, and get an actual intuition about what moves are best, by partially giving a score to each position, again, solely on "intuition". To calculate every single combination of 20-30-60 moves in the future will take more then the age of the universe with all the computer power that has ever existed. Is actually insane what AI can do in modern day. But yeah, it's the same concept, humans get better at chess by recognizing patterns and positions that are advantageous, since we can only look maybe 3-5-10 moves in the future at a sight, computers can "only" look "a few millions or billions" of moves in the future, so they NEED to also recognize advantageous positions, since chess has insane combinations of positions, more combinations then the number of atoms in the known universe. Nice thing is that computers can and will remember millions of games.

TL;DR chess engine beat humans with the same strategy that humans beat humans: better preparation, pattern recognition, and computing power. Also, we don't fully understand how they beat us, modern engines are "black boxes", we built them, but how they trained, we'll never understand, just as you can't understand how a chess player is better then another by scanning their brains and look at their neural connections.

TWO MONTHS?? Dang, and I thought tennis matches went on for a long time.

Why is Knight denoted by an N when the word starts with a K?

It is funny to see how Gothamchess's personality changes. He can be formal and he can be the wildest man alive

9:20 – yeah but what about promotions? You could have two queens, or two same-colored bishops, so you'd have to write the disambiguation anyway 😀

levy never fails to be a chess pro, never disappoint

I respect Magnus Carlsen but the way he reacted to his loss to Hans Niemann did not feel right to me. Now even lower rated players beat him. Are they cheaters too?

Levy is the type of person to see a chess set and ask “is anyone going to eat that?” And not wait for an answer.

I heard Hans Niemann was busted using a Niemann device at a simultaneous exhibition 😮

People say "not even make 6 figures" like 6 figures isn't a huge amount of money, I make like 1/4th that, 1/3rd in an amazing year.

1:50 this guy’s lying he loves caro-kann. Levi please stop trying to be sophisticated with your Sicilian side lines

Fails never levies to magnus video in his feature

The most satisfying checkmate is either e.p.# or O-O# / O-O-O#

The Thumbnail: POV You are about to sack a Rook

Most memorable move for me was Ding Liren in the world championship. When he was low on time and everyone thought he was going to repeat moves to make a draw… but then he gambled everything by going for the win. It was so shocking, but it worked. He won the game and became the world champion. Incredible courage to go for it.

Actually, the balance patch wasn't "adding en passant", it was to allow a pawn taking two steps in one move (while still on its starting position). En passant simply exists to allude to the fact that the pawn actually takes those two steps, so it sort of pauses after the first step and gets taken there.

This story is quite helpful for students to understand en passant.

The most famous move in chess? Definitely saccing THE ROOOOOOK!

12:20 have you ever been interested in trying old games 'recreated' to what people think the rules might have been? I am speaking of a few games like Royal Game of Ur, Senet, Tablut, Nine Mens Morris, Hnefatafl, and possibly others. There are even online computer simulations you can play of some of these.

This guy knows lot about chess. He should write a book.

We all know the most satisfying checkmate is enpassant checkmate

Smothered mate is the most satisfying? Sure mating a king who's kissing his homies goodbye is always good, but en passant checkmate… That's the good stuff

great video, but some of these questions could just be googled, like the prize money that is just a google search away

Man writes 1 bool and calls himself an authoe

Idk why I always get the feeling that gothamChess is the equivalent of Joshua Weissman but in chess. Weird feeling ik.

This guy got me inspired to start my own channel

I think the coolest (and rare) checkmate is promotion to knight for an insta-mate

When did bleeping 'Hey Siri' no longer become a thing? Can't watch YouTube without headphones anymore. Lol

My favorite mate is the en passant mate Jon Ludvig Hammer did against magnus

they made an update once castling required 2 moves

Thank you Levy! Im currently stuck with my progress but your videos have been helping me. thank you!

On the topic of resigning…has anyone ever REFUSED an opponent’s resignation?

Like, say the person playing black pauses the clock and extends their hand, then the white player is just like “naw, we ain’t done here.”

That would be amazing if this has actually happened. 🤣

Have you seen your irl doppelganger?? @NCHammer23

GUYS the funniest thing in the world just happened at 6:00 he said hey Siri and my Siri responded and answered the question 😂
