I co-started a club at work recently, we've had 3 tournaments and will hopefully soon be able to get our own sets and clocks to organize lessons 🙂

My take on this, is that Chess is a 1v1 competitive sport, this is why Boxing, league of legends, and other sports or games of sorts gain the same audience.
Gaining and aiming towards WHO IS BETTER is always loved, there should be a UFC of chess. Limits on the line, shows that add chess.
Battle bots is amazing because it shows the fun at the end, the finished product at work, you WORKED on that, you MADE that, you ENGINEERED that.
That's why it's beautiful. Work, intelligence, and then the end, big boom. Like seeing a checkmate either on yourself or others.

I remember 7 years ago when I used to play chess, I was always told not to and wasn't good at it so I quit. Recently, when I saw an actual game played, I was so excited that I decided to pick it up again. Although I never watched Queen's Gambit or didn't learn about the Chess Cheater scandal just a few weeks ago, it makes me happy that we got more people participating in chess through them but this makes me sad. As a viewer, I'm not complaining but just sad.

Chess has the same exact problems as BJJ. Not enough high level competitors putting out engaging content. And the format is too “boring” for widespread viewership and to be more commercialized.

Chess has never been more popular in the history of the game. I suspect that this tournament event between the two most popular chess individuals will happen because now that we know about it, the fan momentum will make it a reality.

The real reason this farce was cancelled? They couldn't sell 50 tickets to an event featuring a couple of out of shape couch potatoes playing chess and then every once in a while getting into the ring for some slapping.

While I agree with the point about the commercial viability of chess, I would like to note that there is at least one other sport where matches take hours and tournaments take weeks and is a commercial success, namely road cycling. The Tour de France is 3 weeks long and each stage takes several hours. The difference probably is that during a stage there are several smaller battles going on that are easy to understand for the average viewer.
I love the honesty in all this. There's more soul to this channel than lots of people realize.
