I don't think he had to do much calculation. I think he just knew that leaving his pawn at a3 means that if Hikaru takes it, his King will be checked when the pawn promotes at f8.

Hey levy. Its nice seeing garry play after a long time. Its always a pleasure to see his games. But ( i know it will sound like a nerd) but actually that calculation isn't that hard. instead of calculating all the moves you just count the squares (White Kd4 Ke5 Kf5 Ke6 f5 f6 f7 f8 =8) (Black Kb5 Ka4 a5 b5 b4 b3 b2 b1 = 8) and since the subtraction results to less than 2 its a draw (Unless ofcourse first to promote promotes with check) (sometimes 2 also work for example in queen vs bishops pawn but it requires extra requirements like defender's king in correct side and opponent's king not in the box) Again i am not insulting Garry nor his extra ordinary level of calculation. Just posted it for people to know this technique.
