In the Hikaru ending, starting at 18:06, it's actually pretty trivial to calculate that White queens in time. Staring with Black K:b5, the Black king moves 3 times to take on b5 & a3, then the b-pawn moves 5 times to queen, so 8 moves in all. White takes 3 moves to capture the Black f-pawn, then moves again to get out of the way, then his f-pawn moves 4 times to queen, again 8 moves total. Regarding the earlier rook and bishop exchanges, as you note it's fantastic instinct on Gary's part.
