He declined to defend the title because he didn't want to play aremgeddon for the championship, but now he's trying to practice his aremgeddon so that he can become stronger and defend the title.

What if Magnus' goal was to win all Armageddons?
magnus obviously lost interest or his interest has slipped to other things. His history with classical is still keeping him going in rapid but that will eventually fade too like how his classical edge has faded. He is still too young to take the mantle of the chess organizations in a guiding position so will be interesting to see what he does in the next few years.

Classical nowadays, because of engines, is basically meant to be played by memorization early and without mistakes mid and endgame. Basically, it is all about move accuracy. Lifeless, robotic. Shorter time controls however introduce human mistakes, which do not make for the best possible chess, but are way more fun an interesting for the players.
