How often does Magnus really play classical chess these days? It is all minute, blitz, or rapid. He probably doesn't want to sit and concentrate for hours anymore at the chess board.
I feel like magnus is just bored at this point. It seems like he plays bad openings on purpose just to give himself a challenge or to feel something different.

I feel like at some point high level chess becomes boring. Everyone knows everything that everyone else is going to do, and it becomes the same choreographed dance over and over and over again. Only with time pressure can the creativity and metaphorical drugs play any smidge of a role, and the game becomes interesting and new.
