I really like the concept of the Casablanca Tournament – revisiting great games of the past, with interesting starting positions very different from the stale standard openings that all serious chess players have memorised out to move X. All that is necessary is choose an interesting game from the past, at a point where the computer evaluation is about equal for both players. I note that this is in rapid time format. But as most of the games were from Classical tournaments, it might be even better if the time format was Classical.

I would have crushed Hikrau with that position, it would have made winning that trophy even at much more immaculate. If they are forced to play positions of the past, ofc I like it. So many positions to consider, from Tal's positions, Morphy's positions, to Fischer's positions. Of course we can even consider positions in the games between the engines, hahaha. Like Stockfish vs Alpha zero.

That's literally the ugliest trophy I've seen 😂
I find this chess variant tournament a great idea. I like the very old games even more, so the Steinitz game in this tournament. Imagine a famous Morphy-Anderson game. Some of their games had enough rigour to start from, I think. Some of the most famous games ever (Evergreen, Immortal, the Opera game) are probably lost within the first few moves and therefore not suitable but Morphy-Anderson was probably not decided within the first few moves, even by today's standards.

as someone form Casablanca m really proud that our city and country Morocco hosted such a magnificent and unprecedented event
Hot take: This event was quite overrated. Even though it was the first time, the number of rounds combined with the lack of knowledge about the position amongst the players made it boring. Vishy was out of theory in just 2 moves lol.
