Hikaru, thanks so much for making this video and staying on top of this issue. I hope more anti-cheating measures are used in important chess events in the future.

I feel like people cheat against me online all the time. Even if it’s only 5 moves per game they definitely cheat. Especially when they get into a bad position

If cheating can be done as simply as this…then just make it as easy to stop it. The players need to be escorted to the toilet! Also, how many loo breaks are needed? Footballers, tennis players [and probably most sports people] can't keep running off to pee! So there needs to be a rule for chess players too!

β€œOh, so it’s NOT your phone, well, we have to give it to the police then because someone accidentally left his or her phone in the toilet.”

The guy sacrificed his phone, but still got banned. I guess he miscalculated the gambit. πŸ˜‚

The cistern is the place where the water is held

is it just me or did hikaru start staring at our soul at the start of a vid?

Dude was definitely tilting after that draw

Ooh! I’ve been missing this kind of drama especially from Hikaru. Also, I loved the weird first second of the video.

The fact that they found a phone without a pin code is SUSPICIOUS and could be someone trying to set him up.

I'd say he was framed. Who has a PINless phone? The only reason I can think of is to make it easy for the officials to find the "identity" of the owner.

God I hate my country so much. Yet another reason to pile up on top of the ugly things as to why Romania sucks.

Great content and spreading awareness about ethics!

When I write exams at uni a restroom is reserved for that exam, scanned for electronic devises and can only be unlocked by the professor walking you to the restroom, seems like a similar idea could be implemented at tournaments

I will hate to say this but I'm one of the worst go to play chess and I do give the strongest one tomorrow and I'm going to cheat so it looks like I can completely with one

I love how organizers say they are putting resources into anti cheating but literally no one is ever caught unless they find a phone in the bathroom.

I'm 1200 ELO and lost against someone. It felt like they always knew how to punish me. After I lost they wanted a rematch and I accepted. Again, I was destroyed. Weeks later I was notified that their account was "destroyed" and I got my ELO back.

But why would you ask for a rematch when you're cheating? What's the point of cheating to begin with, when you only end up playing against stronger players who are out of your league…

    PS: Talking about online chess.

In the final round of a state championship, I had an opponent literally take a picture of our on-going game with his phone, then walk to the bathroom with it. I told the TD and he said that maybe that was a big deal elsewhere, but not in Arkansas. This guy had lost every single other game in the tournament and was rated less than I was. I've never been beaten so soundly even against masters. The TDs literally didn't care even when they found the phone in his vest pocket. They just told him to stop carrying his phone.

Your voice is perfect for this. Reminds me of β€˜90s sports commentators meets local radio DJ. ❀

They should start tracking on which moves the players go to the bathroom.

I've never seen someone cheat against a 400 lower of their rating πŸ’€

3:58: For the ELO difference to win rates. For every 400 points the two are separated increases the favorites odd to 10^x to 1. With his game to the 1200, his odds of winning are ~10^1.25 to 1 or 94.68%.

The Niemann's scandal is UNRESOLVED? Wait what 🀣

What do you think of this : could contact lenses cameras be already in use for cheating?

The board overlay would allow for real time play

it is a shame on chess authorities that they are allowing washroom visits during game HAHAHA

    The stare πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€β˜ οΈπŸ’€

The reason Hikaru talks so fast is because he premoves the words in his mind

Nepo was probably hungover and had to pee a lot

The app used, Chessify, is an app that allows you to take a picture of a physical chessboard, and convert it to a digital, PGN position and then analyze it. Now, it's beyond me how could the guy snap a picture of the board on the table just as he was leaving for the bathroom without nobody noticing.

"My english has gotten worse so I'm not sure what cistern means". I think very few native english speakers even know what a cistern is. I'm still don't know what it is

As a Romanian, I've got to say, this doesn't make me happy that this kind of stuff popped up.

Cistern is the bit of the toilet that holds the water for flushing away poops 🚽

I had people cheat against me in tennis, in a friendly training match. Just by saying the ball was out when it wasn't, and vice versa. Their trainer would come, and back them up. Then my trainer would come, look at me and then at the other two and say: Well, it's their word against yours, they are much more experienced than you, so you probably saw that wrong. Why are you making a fuss? It's just a training game.

All I'm saying is, people will cheat if given the opportunity. Sometimes the only motivation is the satisfaction of getting away with it. If you were on the bathroom 10 times on tournaments, and 9 times they didn't even check it, you will absolutely think you could cheat there, no matter how dumb your method seems to everyone else.

It would be way, way more fun if the arbiter had just pocketed the phone and given it to another arbiter… then the player would have not only known that someone knew something but also could not have requested his phone back.
