I remember when this came out, I was in elementary school. 1984 or so I guess. We were singing "We are the world" in music class, and goofing it up – doing the Stevie Wonder head sway, singing in a deep Bruce Springsteen voice, typical elementary boy shenanigans – and the music teacher goes, "if you boys don't appreciate singing the number one song on the pop charts…"
But before she could finish Mike Leslie interrupted her with, "No it isn't! 'One Night in Bangkok' beat it on the countdown last night!"
She just turned red and walked out of the room.
That's still a core memory nearly 40 years later.
It certainly does make a hard man humble!

Not much of a chess follower, but when I first heard that the story was about an unsavory American v a nice Russian, I thought Chess had an anti-American ring to it. I read later that Bobby Fischer, who Head's character was likely based, was reputedly not a nice guy and so far It sounds like Spassky, Cold War aside, was better to be around.
