The lyrics of this song are a clever example of clever double entendre.
Yes, it’s about chess. Yes, it’s about a city that is famous as being a place where Westerners go to seek out every kind of forbidden or illegal sexual flavor or perversion.
But what sets the lyrics apart is that the song is soaked in irony. The chess player could be playing chess in a locked them anywhere, but here he is, playing a cerebral game in a city whose sensual temptations don’t matter to him.
The song is brilliantly produced with an incredible musical team. You can’t help with toe tap or dance when it comes on, and the sound quality is exotic, just like the city of Bangkok seems to Westerners.
As a song, it’s totally brilliant and one of a kind.
I agree with a comment that the best version is the original one with Murray Head.
