I went to see Chess when it was on in the West End, London back in the 80s. Wasn't particularly memorable. But this song is unique – nothing else quite like it.

I actually never heard this song until now. I looked it up after watching an episode of MST3K where the movie was about Native American werewolves and at the end of it, there's this tribal drumming and Mike and the bots are singing lyrics from a whole bunch of songs in rhythm with it. This was the only one I didn't recognize. I spent the 1980s listening to acid rock and obscure industrial noise…so I had never heard of it. I can see why everyone loves it though!

All these years and I had no idea this song was about chess. Great 80's song though.

What an epic, generational song. I was 13 when this came out and did home karaoke to it many, many times. The video has yellowface, so that wouldn't fly now. But the song itself is pure gold.
