The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

    จริวัฒน์ หมั่นมา says:

    Lessons learned and hopefully kept.

Can someone explain to me why Ding sacrificed the pawn on his last move instead of moving his king up one square?

I feel so much safer starting the game with the lady who invented the vax 😂

@@0:07 I thought Agad said "5.4 Yan and 4.4 Ding" was really confused for a second!

Wrong PGN in the description! (Also for game 11. The game 9 PGN is in the description for both.)

The weight of the winner this year will be a lot. They will be the world champion but not the number one player.

Nepo cant have his flag but the Chinese were are committing genocide can. FIDE is a joke. If we use the same logic for banning the Russian flag, Americans shouldnt have been allowed to fly their flag for what their country did in Afghanistan for 20 years

    6:21 After 14.O_O is on the board, Stockfish 11+ actually thought 14…Bd7 was slightly better than 14…h4. But then it has an amazing, wild, best line for white, sac'ing R, B and Q to promote another queen then gain back R & B too: 15.exd6! Qxe2 16.dxc7 h4 17.Qg5 Bxf2+ 18.Rxf2 Qxd1+ 19.Rf1 Qe2 20.Be5 Rh7 21.Qd8+ Rxd8 22.cxd8=Q+ Be8 23.Bd6+ Kg8 24.Be7 Rh6 25.Qxe8+ Kh7 26.Qxf7 h3 27.Qf5+ Kh8 28.Qc8+Kh7 29.Qxb7 +0.5 I would have loved to have seen that in the game….

Nepo: With just four games to go, all I have to do is not lose.
Ding: With just four games to go, the pressure is increasingly on me to win.

Here's what happens if you move here; and here's what happens if you do this; and here's what happens if you play this entirely different game which I'll show you now. (An hour later). Okay, so that's what happens when all those unplayed moves are played. Now, they weren't played in the game but you needed to see them all.

Ding has got to win a game as black if he is to have a shot at this WCC. Both of them are extraordinary white players but Nepo seems to be better with the black pieces. Ding has to pull a miracle in the next game

"It looks like you have achieved something, but you really haven't achieved anything"
Agad going Asian Parent mode today XD

    16. cxd3 Nxe5 17. Qh8+ 1-0

I think Ding has shown in this match so far, that he can outplay Ian, and that he lacks confidence.😥

This "championship" match is a joke. Both of these players would get wrecked by Magnus.

Ding just gave me a new variation on this opening.

why is it that only Ding and Nepo are the only ones playing. sorry i am new in chess

Why he bluders if i takes with is rock?

I could never playing the same opening more than once when there are only 14 games or so. It would would seem with the amount of time they had before the match.if I had that much time I would at least 3 times as many prepared

Actually after every game…magnus should be asked…how should one progress in dead draw….

Ding has the brains but not the confidence unfortunately……nice guys always finish last.

Agadmator, you posted the game 9 in this video.

Nepo looks mentally more prepared than Ding, fans of neither but I guess eventually Nepo will win.

Edit: With the Correct ECO Code:

    Ding,Liren 2788 – Nepomniachtchi,Ian 2795 [A28] W-chFIDE 40/90 20/60 G/15/+30 Sec (2023), Astana KAZ 2023.04.23 (10) 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e5 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.e4 Bc5 5.Nxe5 Nxe5 6.d4 Bb4 7.dxe5 Nxe4 8.Qf3 Nxc3 9.bxc3 Bc5 10.Qg3 Kf8 11.Be2 d6 12.Bf4 Qe7 13.Rd1 h5 14.0-0 h4 15.Qd3 g5 16.exd6 cxd6 17.Bxd6 Qxd6 18.Qxd6+ Bxd6 19.Rxd6 Be6 20.f4 Ke7 21.Rd4 gxf4 22.Rfxf4 h3 23.g4 Rac8 24.Kf2 Rc5 25.a4 Ra5 26.Bd1 b6 27.Kg3 Rh6 28.Rfe4 Kf8 29.Rd8+ Kg7 30.Ra8 Rc5 31.Rxa7 Bxc4 32.Rae7 Rhc6 33.R7e5 Rxe5 34.Rxe5 Bb3 35.Bxb3 Rxc3+ 36.Kh4 Rxb3 37.Rb5 Ra3 38.Rxb6 Rxa4 39.Kxh3 f5 40.gxf5 Rf4 41.Rb5 Kf6 42.Kg3 Rxf5 43.Rxf5+ Kxf5 44.h4 Kg6 45.h5+ Kxh5 ½–½

1:02 As a professional event & wedding photographer i must say that those photos taken by 'those' photographers are amateur level at most… weird angles, 0 composition, very noisy photos… You would expect that they could hire some REAL professionals for Chess World Championship… its just sad imho.

Since agadmator posted Game 9 again I will post Game 10 here:

    Ding,Liren 2788 – Nepomniachtchi,Ian 2795 [E28] W-chFIDE 40/90 20/60 G/15/+30 Sec (2023), Astana KAZ 2023.04.23 (10) 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e5 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.e4 Bc5 5.Nxe5 Nxe5 6.d4 Bb4 7.dxe5 Nxe4 8.Qf3 Nxc3 9.bxc3 Bc5 10.Qg3 Kf8 11.Be2 d6 12.Bf4 Qe7 13.Rd1 h5 14.0-0 h4 15.Qd3 g5 16.exd6 cxd6 17.Bxd6 Qxd6 18.Qxd6+ Bxd6 19.Rxd6 Be6 20.f4 Ke7 21.Rd4 gxf4 22.Rfxf4 h3 23.g4 Rac8 24.Kf2 Rc5 25.a4 Ra5 26.Bd1 b6 27.Kg3 Rh6 28.Rfe4 Kf8 29.Rd8+ Kg7 30.Ra8 Rc5 31.Rxa7 Bxc4 32.Rae7 Rhc6 33.R7e5 Rxe5 34.Rxe5 Bb3 35.Bxb3 Rxc3+ 36.Kh4 Rxb3 37.Rb5 Ra3 38.Rxb6 Rxa4 39.Kxh3 f5 40.gxf5 Rf4 41.Rb5 Kf6 42.Kg3 Rxf5 43.Rxf5+ Kxf5 44.h4 Kg6 45.h5+ Kxh5 ½–½

Why did Ding give up the last pawn to his opponent? He could have won the game by just playing his king forward a step.

The PGN in the description is for game 9, not game 10.

Ding needs to win next game. Else it would become tough to control the game. Hope he makes comeback in style and this series remains interesting.
Anyways, this event is far more interesting than previous one (involving Carlsen)

I’ve been a little disappointed in Ding. On the other hand, Nepo has solved his blunder issues from the last WCC, so good for him!
