The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

I've played Ra2 or …Ra7 in other openings with the same idea. That was in the 1980s.

Ding could have won! He blew it. He won't be champ.

My analyzis of the 8 games played are that no matter how good Ding becomes, his nerves are not good enough to be a world champion.
He needs a couple of bong hits before (and during) the games.

I do not understand the people who only want to check the moves. This is absolutly the wrong channel for you. Why even watching chess if not for understand the possibilities which were in a position? Or are you checking the games with an engine in detail by yourself?^^

"Looks like a Bond villain" should be a new catch phrase for the channel. LMAO.

So it was as simple as bc6? Why the f does he think so long to make the absolute worst move?!

This match is over. Ding runs out of prep and can't convert and then can't hold his nerves. Nepo eventually outplays and outlasts Ding. And if this really is released prep that was done on Lichess, then this is beyond stupid on Ding's and Rapport's parts. Mentally outclassed before the match even starts. Nepo will win 7.5-4.5, I think.

Ding can't calculate the free rook when he had 22 mins 😅 second tier chess player

    Ding got bluffed!
    He's a coward
Always having meltdowns during the last minutes of the game
I wont be surpeised if nepo will be crownes champion.

"Looks like a Bond villain a little bit, but I don't know, I havent seen all that many Bond movies" had me laughing before the game even started.

However much I am rooting for Ding, I am starting to believe that Nepo is by far a big margin to be crowned the title. There are still more matches, let's see how the two fight it off.

If Ding is unable to calculate the line till the very end with excuses of time scramble and simply fall for a bluff after Qh4, he can withdraw from the match as well. He cannot be a real contender. Ian just turned it to a card game and Ding fell for it. Unbelievable. It is not me and you. It's Ding who is falling for it. After Qh4, both had 24 minutes on the clock and it was move 31. All Ding had to do is calm down and think. Even if he spent 20 minutes on that move, he wouldn't lose the game on time. He would see all the line and play the forced moves, and reach move 40 easily. He could even waste 2 moves to gain time with Be2, Bf1. And Ian would feel the time pressure as well. Ding shouldn't cry now. What was he thinking ? Was he thinking, "if Ian played Qh4, he must have calculated till the end of the line and it should be a perpetual, he cannot simply drop the rook like that, right ? This is a world championship match." No Ding no, he just bluffed you like a child and you fell for it. Now you showed another weakness in your play, your opponents can bluff you if you are under time pressure and you can fall for it.

“Its Nepo, the knight is not going back” 💀💀

In my humble opinion after watching first 8 games I concluded that Magnus Carlsen wouldn’t have problem retaining his title. Games are exciting but Magnus is on another level

The best line: "Even Nepo had to spend his time here". 😂
