The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

I don't know anything about the guy who did the first move, but I could bet he should be in jail…

I am so invested in this years wc..
Which i never thought would happen

I'm not good at calculating, but I do feel there is a time in Chess when you need to be bold, as well as times when you need to not be too greedy and in both cases you just need to hold your nerve and do what you feel is the principled move

9:05 Of course you cannot capture the knight, it would be 2 moves as black in a row hehe 🙂

What a great championship match! We are fortunate.

Who are in Ian Nepomniachtchi training team ? Is he alone fighting Richard and Din Liren without any trainer or support team?

#suggestion: Hi, Agad. It'd be cool if you tell when the phrase you use up the screen is actually said. In the case of this video, e.g., when did Dubov said that "it's either bad or it works"?

All I can say is that I agree- absolute madness

This world championship looks rigged. Leaked prep, so many decisive games, one player wins, than the other… FIDE had to make it interesting, because causals wouldn't watch it, knowing that Carlsen isn't playing and he is by far the strongest player, way better than those two combined.

Qxf6? i think that is Nezhmetdinov vs Chernikov right?

Whats the story behind the qxf6 t-shirt?

Even the draws are unbelievably wild, most exciting WCC in a long time!

This is why commentators with Eval bar are clowns.

NOBODY NOBODY !! Nepo well, its bluffing time ! HAHAHA

Ian needs to find a different opening against 1 d4. because he was very lucky to hold this game.

Ding is bringing us some really great games by taking risk playing some line which leads to those beautiful positions

I can't see what scared Ding off of taking the rook. Disclaimer I am rooting for Ding, that being said if Ding folds for nothing then well I guess Nepo deserves it.

Wow! And that's why they are 2700 players and I'm only … "somewhat" lower.

    Omg u so prefessional
All old games in old games??

It was painful Ding didn't take this one! 😢

0:00 And it was in this position we have a completely new shirt 😂

Like many others, I watched the game live. Again, Ding froze completely several times. He blundered every time after a long time of defrosting. He doesn't control his emotions. Perhaps he is a better player than Nepo, it is even probably, but Nepo controls his emotions much better. Previous game, Ding also froze completely and wasted very, very much time and came with a bad move. Nepo will reach 7 points before Ding. I believe that chances for Ding to win the match are around 5%. He is much too insecure.

We are just now realizing how much we miss Magnus Carlsen.

I love you brother, but please please don't say "tiu" XD

If those lichess accounts do belong to Ding and Rapport, that's a surprising lapse in security. At this level, I would expect these players to have private servers/software that allow them to play intra-team prep games over the internet without the moves becoming part of a public database. Even if the capability doesn't already exist within the tools used by the top pros (I have no idea), I'd expect the Chinese government to have set Ding up with something like that. It would take hardly any time/money to develop.

Wow, what a game… Thanks to Ding for forcing such interesting lines. And thanks to Nepo for being himself, and not playing boring chess.

Ding might be better technically but Nepo is a master of mind games and confusing opponent. This Queen bluff…

Great video; Fascinating on many levels.

Nepo's all but won now (this will not age well). Ding is unanchored because he no longer can tell the difference between Good Nepo (it is a trap) and Bad Nepo (it's a blunder that looks like a trap at first).

I like the short version at the end! Like a brief summary after a great lesson.

Have been watching ur channel for a couple years now, love the way you break down the games.

Well from opening to middlegame Ding aces it but due to overthinking, due to not daring, Ding kinda destroys it, so self destructive play from his part. Nepo so far even though he leads it feels Ding is the one who manages to not fully exploit the momentum he creates in his games. But seriously from opening to middlegame he builds such a good momentum to win the game, he has a winning position but manages to mess up and Ian picks the leftovers from Dings breakdown. Ian mentally seems tougher but his chess isn't something special yet. Ding plays his heart out but manages to lose.
