World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single “sudden death” games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Official website:

Also, normally there are bad bishops in chess. But here, Liren's knight turned into a BAD KNIGHT. Its very frustrating when that happens. From personal experience, you feel like you are always behind the eight ball. No matter where you move your knights, it never is able to get into action.
There is a huge difference between Carlsen and Liren in terms of calibre. Carlsen would never lose such a simple knight and pawn ending. It doesn't look too good for the game of chess, that their world champion, cant even defend such a simple looking position.

Re Vlad :
I view Vlad's accusation of Hans similar to Bobby's accusation of Anatoly Karpov & Wesley's wanting Sergey to not be in the 2022 candidates – it's a good guy fighting another good guy. The real bad guy in each respective case is Magnus, Garry & Magnus again. Tsk tsk. It's sad Vlad/Bobby/Wesley didn't realise that Magnus/Garry/Magnus is far more evil than Hans/Anatoly/Hans. Wait, I think Bobby did. Not sure. I think Bobby hated Garry more than Anatoly, but maybe not by much more.

why is ding playing 1.e4 ? Last year was understandable as he was hiding his prep of WC match. He has always been 1.c4 or 1.d4 player.
I think Ding doesn't have the mentality to be a world chess champion, just like Nepo doesn't to become one.

Hopefully for Ding this was just rust. It was accurate play by Pragg who capitalised on Ding's mistakes and fully deserved to win, but this shouldn't have been a difficult defense for a top player.
