Something about chess theory reminds me of my years studying music theory: both areas have odd little names for common idioms that involve place names, where the reasons for that name have become quite obscure or irrelevant to their use now.
In chess, it's opening stuff like Sicilian Defence, Indian Defence, Berlin Variation, Catalan Opening, and so on.
In western music theory, it's stuff like Neapolitan chord, German sixth, French sixth, Italian sixth, Phrygian mode, etc.
