I'll be honest i trust the opinion more of someone good at chess than someone bad at it. It isn't that they're smarter or anything. I just prefer the mind of the type of person who likes chess over the person who doesn't. The way you'd analyze and think about the things around you is likely different.
You have to have a very specific mind to be a grand master in chess. It isn’t something you can just do. You have to play chess non stop from childhood as well as have the mind of a chess player.
I'm not saying his elo is not 1800, but he might be pertaining to his online ranking which is at 1800, the only way you can compute for your elo is about the tournaments that you joined in, and how strong the players you are participating with, joining online matches would not translate to an increase or decrease of a person's elo rating. Your rating would increase or decrease by joining Official tournaments that are governed by Fide.
Chess is funny in that sense, the real game is the study. The outcome is simply a reflection of the study and the alignment that the game had with the study. If you get lucky, high alignment if not then low alignment. More study, higher alignment.
1800 is still great tho
