I don't agree with your suggestion that Magnus lost the first game because he handicapped himself with the opening. That's unfair to his opponent. Magnus got outplayed fair and square that game. He's human and capable of being beaten even when he was in top form, which he's not currently.
I feel like guys like Hikaru and Magnus are getting pulled a bit into the social media/meme culture of today… And I think it's absolutely fine! That's so many more opportunities today to develop yourself as a 'brand' or figure beyond just chess, and a lot more money (call it career opportunities) today is having scope beyond being a niche world champion.
As much as I'd love to see Magnus continue to dominate, I think what a lot of people saying about him just wanting something different is also something that chess players today can do, that just wasn't an option in the past!

I respect magnus. After all, you can only imagine how pressuring and demanding it can be to keep his status at the top, not to mention how many hours and time and effort he has put into it. He achieved everything that a chess player might want in life including being called the best chess player in the world, winning world championships and actually making a living out of it. he deserves some rest and a good time! he is young!

I think as we move towards "AI solving Chess" we move away from the part of the game Magnus liked and its as simple as that. AI aren't gonna solve poker for instance because they just don't understand the mind games.
I'm sure to a degree he doesn't "care" anymore in the sense he has proven himself, as everyone says. But he also did too much drinking to hold up to old standards anymore too.

I think all that online chess is messing with his game. If you kept playing weak players, eventually, you become weak, too. Also, it makes him lose the perspective of losing or winning games.

Magnus has got bored of winning. Quite understandable. It is more important to enjoy life and chess than to win every match.
He has achieved anything you can achieve in Chess. There are only two things left he can do: 1., Playing against Computers which are unbeatable. Lame. 2., He can make a fun out of it and look "Can I beat a Grandmaster with an opening which is that bad that nobody which is not on drugs would play it? Seems like the day to find out!" He has FUN in the game. He simply dont need to care anymore if he wins or lose.
