Now before I say this, I gotta say I am a fan of Magnus. But the GOAT, this is very arguable, the thing that bothers me is that your average player seems to be COMPLETELY disregarding history. Elo is one thing, sure, if we are just going by rated playing strength, yes Carlsen is the GOAT. If we're going that direction than you can argue Fischer as around #4 or so of all time. But, World Champion Reigns- for pure longevity on the throne, which definitely counts for something:
Emanuel Lasker: Undisputed World Champion for 27 years, with the longest reign.
Garry Kasparov: World No. 1 for 255 months. Let me state that again as 21 years and a few months. Also most consecutive tournament victories with 15 in a row. Just a little bit of context, gotta do the homework for sure. Cannot forget the past because yes, Magnus is a little more charismatic than Garry and was younger when he first won it…..I'm not saying don't root for the man, I'm in, but there is an argument. But then we have Alekhine: 17 years World Champion AND Botvinnik: 13 years undisputed World Chanpion. THEN we have Magnus at 10 years World Champion. Length of reign should still count for something and if we're having the GOAT conversation, these august gentlemen that came before Carlsen DEFINITELY deserve a mention. They are certainly not forgotten by serious players. I think if we could ask them they might even question Magnus. Stepping down so soon? I for at least one would want to see more classical games from the man. He is super wily, creative, definitely artistic and truly unpredictable in his play. But yeah, it was a a great run, for sure one for the books and I'm certain everyone wishes him the best. And I gotta say the clickbait worked but one player is (LEE-VEYE) and the other is
