I wonder if in 200 years they'll look back at our games and think that we don't know anything about chess like we look back at their times….

To be fair, the guy did more with his life than build this chess contraption 🙂

"Kempelen also created a manually operated speaking machine.[4] An early version (possibly an original) can still be seen in the Musical Instruments section of the Deutsches Museum in Munich. In 1789, he published a book containing his nearly twenty years of speech research, Mechanismus Der Menschlichen Sprache Nebst Beschreibung Seiner Sprechenden Maschine.[5]

He constructed steam-engines, waterpumps, a pontoon bridge in Pressburg (1770), patented a steam turbine for mills (1788/89) and a typewriter for Mozart's friend a blind Viennese pianist Maria Theresia von Paradis (1779), and built a theatre house in Buda (inaugurated 25 October 1790) (now Budapest) and the famous fountains at Schönbrunn in Vienna (1780). He was also a talented artist and etcher, wrote poems and epigrams, and composed a singspiel, Andromeda and Perseus, performed in Vienna." (Wikipedia)

So he's quite similar to you Levy 😅mainly known for your entertaining chess content but also a talented singer and music producer. 😂
We're excited to find out what you'll add next to your legacy. 😉

rofl i guessed immediately it was just a guy in the box

when you know the story of turk even before you know gothamchess

1770 cheating: man inside a device, 2022 cheating: device inside a man

My favorite videos of Gotham are the historical ones

For anyone as confused as I was, the Turk was all a hoax, where a human chess player sat in a box and controlled the “robot” to play chess.

OMG this is very cool… The turk?

5:50 "Napoleon tried the scholar's mate, and then that's pretty much where his knowledge of chess went away".

Him and every friggin 400 elo game ever, lol. At least Napoleon didn't resign?

Legend says the man operating the machine was the unknown Spanish grandmaster "Magnificent Carlitos"

    Summary

🤖 The Chess Turk was the world’s first AI invention that played chess against humans, created in 1770 by Wolfgang von Kempelen.

🗺 The Chess Turk went on a world tour, impressing people by defeating notable figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin.

🥴 However, the Chess Turk’s dark secret was eventually revealed – it was actually a hoax, with a human chess player hidden inside the contraption.

🔥 The Chess Turk was destroyed in a fire in 1854, putting an end to its 80-year illusion of being an AI chess robot.

🔍 The story of the Chess Turk highlights the long history of humans attempting to cheat at chess for more than 250 years.

🔍 The Chess Turk’s story reveals the long history of cheating in chess.

All I got from this is it’s fine to cheat at chess if you claim it’s a side project

Visited the Museum where the rebuild is exposed, fascinating stuff 😊

This is one of your best videos, even though I knew the story. You should make more historical chess videos

These games could be a great content for GTE

Levy for the 892384th time – "Like I said they didnt know how to play chess"

Btw, electricity is a natural thing so it didn't get invented, we just had to discover a method of harnessing it.

John Cochrane was a strong player of his time, he's credited for the Cochrane defense in the engame Rook vs Rook +bishop

16:58 the Turk fought without a starting pawn AND with two pieces on their home squares… Yeah, not even close.

Nice to know we humans havenot changed…maybe we change how we play chess?

12:52 "this is the dumbest ai i've seen in my life.
    Martin : Hold my beer!

Even as a hoax, it is a pretty impressive piece of engineering.

This Napoleon dude seems really bad att chess. He probably needs your book Levy

@gothamchess this is fantastic, I love these videos that combine chess history with game analysis

I dare anyone to say "Ding is the sound a doorbell makes" on Levi's Twitch chat. You will get permanently banned.. I kid you not. I did and got instant banned and it wasn't overturned. I know there are fascists in today's world, but it's crazy how bad those mods are

How did they fly this thing… get this man some history lessons 😂😂

Most new technology is a Turk, at least at first. They hack our minds in order to get that sweet, sweet funding.

Fun fact: scholars mate is called "Napoleon's plan" in Arabic

Levy must've gotten the same YouTube recommendation for the Timeline History Automatons Documentary 😂

There was only one thing missing after building that ingenius contraption; the human factor 😆

…electricity was invented at the beginning of the universe.
It wasn't really manufactured, harnessed and distributed into homes until Edison invented the first electric light bulb that could be used inside, in 1879. I wrote a book report about it in seventh grade…25 years ago. Weird how some things stick in the mind.

Also, I laughed aloud to myself when you said "Trying a four move checkmate on a robot that's supposedly been destroying everyone doesn't seem like a great steategy for Napolean," because my first thought when you said it was "Yeah, it's right up there with all his other greatest strategic brilliancies, like attacking Russia in the middle of winter." 😂

Gothem could u analyze this crazy game with Blitzkrieg_Riss vs UnstoppableGus

Bet the guy under the table must've use Stockfish when making a move. Maybe the earlier version of SF. When The Turk lost, it's because of connection lost or high ping.

i already knew the story, but not the games. Thanks!

Stockfish plays pawn to E3 Levy: A BRILLIANT MOVE SACRIFICING THE ROOK TO INFILTRATE THE POSITION
The Turk plays pawn to E3 Levy: What a boogus move WHAT is the Turk DOING

the average 800 elo would easily beat these guys

Fun fact: this commentary section is loaded with fun facts.
