Noobs, you are lucky that GothamChess exists.

Hey there, MISTER GothamChess (you deserve the added prefix because your videos are very instructive). . . thanks for making this how-to study video. I'm a high school math teacher and Chess coach and I really think your insights on how to study will help our team take it to the next level. Our team competes on Lichess as part of the U.S. Chess Center's Metro Area Chess League (MACL) and I've done some "brute force" research of our opponents' games. You've shown me another way to approach doing this sort of "oppo" research.

Be well and keep on making your high-quality, highly-instructive videos.

Idk how to play with white lol i just got good at the Scandinavian defense on black

Finally time to revisit this vid after finally wanting to get serious about opening theory

I started playing a couple months ago I do one opening rn I'm 1013Blitz and 1001 on rapid I got to 1197 on rapid but I just dropped

Always assume your opponent will see through your questionable move. I agree that you can play moves that aren't the top top but always check the engine and make sure it doesn't immediately fail tactically or development wise.

I’m not really good at chess it’s kind of hard

Bro the names are so confusing can you simply wat exactly is it .

I appreciate this vid and it brought a different way to attempt studying in my half ass kind of studying ways ❤ #helpful

Be water and adjust to your opponent accordingly..

    Never rush unless it's clear

I'm a mid thirties guy who is looking at getting into chess having learned the basics on how to play in my teens.
Do you suggest I start studying now, or just playing?

i dont understand i just cant learn and i never get any better i need some serious chess help

It's a strategy to get out of memorization quickly, and into creative middle game. The reason why Bobby Fisher proposed Fisher Random. To prevent opening memorization and instead foster ingenuity.

Lessons like this dont help no one who doesnt understand tactics and strategy, which are more important.

thanks for teaching me i got 5 great moves and 1 brilliant moves

Thanks for the tips! Right now I'm analyzing others' games and now i understand the moves they play.

Nah just do the great wall of china, that one give yeah a huge advantage depending on the game or the opponents defense

Me: I have a great opening prepared, I will play e4 and my opponent will play e5 and then I'm gonna get him
    Opponent: doesn't
    Me: well, shit.

I use Kings Indian almost every match after knowing it because it suits me as a defensive player and after im done doing the castling i just goes offensive mode

Me being a beginner: Moves a random Pawn*

Them: Ah yes the Rubber Duckie Defense

Me: What the hell is the Rubber Duckie defense

Yooo I'm learning chess because I want to beat my crush at it, he's a medalist! This the first video I watched and will definitely get back if I emerged triumph!

Still a bit confused but amazing video very detailed

I just played 5 games and every single person started the same way

    I just quit
    Too boring

Studying the Vienna Game on Lichess is funny af… The difference between the Masters and the Lichess database is amazing. After f4 the most common move is a clear mistake and the right move d5 is only third (Vienna Gambit) and equally popular is the Trash Variation… xD with White already winning 62% of the games…

I think I‘m literally just dump.
I dont get the tactics, I dont recognize anything my Opponent does, I think I‘m hopeless. Literally

Gotham what's the pe4, bc4 +qf3 as white? Gets played against me all the time

Levy: "They also take from amateurs"
Me: "Oh so like 200s to 600s?"
    Levy: "You know 1000s, 1600s—"
    Me: "Oh"

Well. This is video is for advanced players only. Too fast for a beginner to grasp.
