I hate to say this but is it as simple as this?… The absence of sports agents? Could those “salesman” types drive more sponsorship and corporate money into the space? Are we relying on chess “nerds” to represent themselves and they are generally preforming to their ability in that regard? Levy, you are a good example of a decent chess player whose skill in marketing is way above average and your success seems to correspond.

This is similar to competitive swimming. Every four years we get to see swimming competition at the Olympics. But swimmers are competing all the time and the competitions are not covered by the media. Michael Phelps had hoped to change this. I see a parallel between chess and swimming.

I think a big problem is that a lot of people are going to watch chess to see top level play, so its difficult to justify watching the world #8 or something when someone like Hikaru is streaming blitz… the market is there, but its going to gravitate heavily to the best players if personality really isn't the focus.

Chess boxing gotta be a massive risk to chess grandmasters who's literal careers depends on them pushing their brains to the maxium. Even minor concussion that harms brain in a way that would normally be immeasurable could potentially be huge detriment to chess super grandmasters. Sure nothing might happen but are people really willing to take such risks when both competitors careers are worth millions of dollars.
And litigation for such injury would be a nightmare as well?
