Some of us old timers still call it the queen rook pawn. Stockfish has opened some games by pushing a rook pawn, lifting the rook and sacrificing the exchange for the opposite bishop! Perhaps Magnus is trying to learn from this nonsense.

I can't wait for the day when an Epic Chess viewer talks to Magnus about the plow and the conversation takes a 30 second detour when Magnus repeatedly asks "the what?" I hope to be that viewer, although it seems unlikely because I can't foresee a scenario where I cross paths with Magnus. You know what– who cares. Magnus didn't invent 1. a4. It's been around for some time and is called, among other names, "The Meadow Hay". I've played it back in the 70s after I saw a game published in the US Chess Life magazine played by IM Eugene Meyer.
I channelled my inner Magnus and tried these plow openings at my local club. Got mated every match.

It is silly how Magnus Carlsen is not the World Champion, and the current World Champion is leagues below Magnus Carlsen, the highest rated player.
We should just give the title back to Magnus until someone else can BEAT Magnus at an event.
i think the theory of his non opening theory moves is to basically give his opponent the first move as black which would never have a reason to be prepared before hand- forcing play over the board over memorization of prepared openings
The thing about Magnus is that I fully believe that he has studies and knows as much theory as it is possible about these sorts of openings. One of his greatest strengths is his capacity to remember things and so he abuses the fact that other players, even great players, have enough difficulty keeping main openings in their heads, let alone esoteric ones like these.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that at one point it was a legal move to push both outside pawns two squares forward if it was your first move. My memory may be making that up, but can you imagine? Magnus armed with the double plow? 😂
