Magnus is OUT, New World Champ Crowned
Today, April 30, 2023, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi and GM Ding Liren of China played four rapid games as a tiebreak for the World Chess Championship title, and one emerged victorious. This is GM Hikaru’s recap.

Declining a draw with one minute on the clock was almost too gangster
Ian just like to get winning positions, play good tactics and feel good about himself. Once he achieves that he becomes carless and find a way to throw the game away. He is too emotional and unstable to be WC. Ding is clearly the better player. There was a suspense just because Ding was inactive for so long and was not at his best. He could not travel to tournaments due to travel restrictions on Chinese, the reason he could not participate in the previous candidates Nepo won (to face Magnus). Then this year, when Karjakin was banned he was the highest rated player and got called. At the time he was not meeting the 26 games minimum required to participate. He litterally had 2 weeks to play 20 officials classicals games. People doubt he could do it and he did. Then went to the candidate without a second or a team to help him prepare, all by himself. He started terribly, down by 2pts I believe in the middle of the tournament, then win like 3 games in the row including I believe a must win against Hikaru and miraculously finishes 2nd, which is not enough. Then Magnus decided to not defend his title and Ding got called. He is the better player when the two play at their best. Nepo was the favorite just from his experience, his huge prep team and recent activity in tournaments. Ding World championship is a great movie. Kudo to him.๐๐

What begun in 1949 is taking place now. When the chinese people arose from poverty, explotation, invasion of empires (Japan, ee.uu) Opium dens, misery….trough "The Long March" of Mao Tse Tung and conversion of Deng, ended in prosperity, FOOD for the people, education, every standard of living arrising, and Now the chinese chess player is the best in this year. When Rosa Parks came from the back of the Bus to the Obama precidency, now is analog to the rise of the Chinese trough Revolution and finally D I N G ! Long Live the new world Champion. Ding is the perfect example of world change.

a moment to consider the EXTREME unlikeliness of ding becoming world champion starting from covid till today. His situation in his country / the difficulty to travel and compete / the complications to qualify for candidates / the huge game against hikaru + the surprise news that magnus wasnt going to play , and then the rollercoaster this world championship has been. I really hope this makes chess way more popular in china….

King Liren!!! Sucks for Nepo, but he fought well overall, and I suspect he'll have more chances in the future.
I was team Ding Liren, and when he won I was jumping up and down. After seeing this video I do feel bad for Nepo he fought so valiantly and without the support of his federation. After losing to Magnus he probably felt this was his opportunity. I am still happy that Ding Liren won after he was forced to play during the pandemic in his best moment losing the opportunity to become the challenger, so justice was done. Will Magnus return? will Nepo vs Ding become one of the greatest rivalities of all time? something like Kasparov vs Karpov but with social media? Magnus staying out of the championship could be one of the best things that happened to chess ever.

World Champion** pretty weird that the third best player is the world champion. Light years behind Magnus. So is he champion? Technically. But heโs no Magnus.

Ding is such a nice guy that he deserves this. I know that people are not gonna accept anyone else than Magnus the world champion but still it is a huge achievement as 100 years later his name will be remembered atleast.๐ฅ

I think the curse of game 6 prevailed….whoever wins game 6, win the championship.
Tal -Botvinik,Fischer-Spassky,Magnus-Nepo and now Ding-Nepo.
Ding had more solid nerves all thruout this tourney, classical and tiebreaks. Almost constantly down on the clock but he honestly plays better that way. This is human chess, so nerves and blunders absolutely are legit. This is not who is better "on paper". The winner fully deserves the win.
Imagine if Rapport wins the Candidates Championship and they meet in the next World Championship, it will be like the story of two friends fighting for one victory over the other.๐ฎ
To have tiebreaks be rapid games etc for a classical chess World Cup feels wrongโฆ.whatโs the point of the classical matches if the winner is determined by a different time format?

In those last moments of despair Ian tried to look around for something to pull to him out of the situation and tried to latch on something thus grabbing the pieces but it doesn't work. He tried making another desperate move and inevitable accepting his loss.
So if hikaru took the draw and won the candates he would be world champion !!
