I was in Wijk aan zee, Tata steel tournament in it's last weekend. I was standing in front, just a few meters from the players from start to end everyday. There were no phones anywhere, the arbiters were very strict. With the public.
Buuuut. I did hear high frequency pitch tones during the second day. I even saw Mustafa YΔ±lmaz (2m from me), like me to close his ears with our fingers because it got really annoying. Then I noticed, when I moved to the sides or turned my head, the tones went away. I found that it was coming from the back of the players hall. So it was aimed somehow. With that tech, you could just simply send your players what they should play.
Also I mean, in tata india, indian players are winning, in Holland suddenly they are losing badly, but Dutch players suddenly seem to win.. I was very saddened this crap happened in chess. I knew sports like football have a lot of corruption. But to first hand in person to see how they do it.. chess lost my respect a bit. Still love the streams and games in neutral countries. But the rest…

Cheaters should be getting fined as well as banned.
I think this happens pretty often in the lower rated weekend tournaments. They can't afford wands, security officers etc. You will only catch them when they rise to higher levels. I don't know, maybe, in order to detect it, you can ping the phone even if it is in airplane mode?

Surprised you haven't heard of Chessify. That app has been around for years and afaik is the only app that actually have a chess board scan function, where you can take a picture of a board and get the position translated into the app automatically.

tbh, even without direct cheating, engines ruined chess because now you can use engines to find how to correctly respond to any line.

Chess is a beautiful game, when you make a mistake it reveals the opportunity to learn and improve, you have total control, there is no RNG. If you cheat you are choosing to ignore your own journey in chess you are choosing not to learn and not to improve.
To me its astonishing that anyone who loves the game would cheat, its about money at that point and when someone loves money more than chess, they dont love chess.
All you have to do is compare chess to other games and find its beauty in depth and seemingly invulnerability to wasting time and you should fall in love with it.
The only way to become a great player is to play it properly, memorizing computer lines will falsely inflate an ego and will come back to haunt a player trying to find a move over the board.
I have no interest in using computer to learn chess, the only way to strengthen your own memory is to find the move yourself, the more pure this process the more enjoyable the game becomes and it becomes a treasure for the rest of your life. If you can get over your own ego and see that a mistake reveals a better move you are already on the path to enjoyment.
Now think about the player who decides to cheat against a 1200 rated player , they will never get out of that loop , a cheater is always someone who has a mental block to proper development because of selfishness and an unwillingness to appreciate or realize the game of chess, sad isnt it.
I feel like there should be a secure area around and including the path to the bathroom, where anyone entering that area has to relinquish any electronic devices, even if they're not a player. They can get it back as soon as they're done doing their business. They'll survive the 5 minutes without a phone on the throne.

I'll never forget the day i quit playing chess. It was a provincial tournament for under 13. I played a guy who made a big blunder and then realized it and moved his piece back. I called for an arbiter and I told him what happened. The kid lied and said I'm lying. The arbiter said well it's your word against his. I ended up losing the game because I was so frustrated. To see the smirk on his face after knowing he cheated. I never played chess competitively again and I haven't really played chess much since. I'm 34 now and it still annoys the fucking shit out of me.
