The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

The ending is reminiscent of Fischer Spassky (I think Game 8?) where Fischer down an exchange dominated Spassky's major pieces and king with his advanced pawn and pieces

Ding tried to make a Monster Knight. 👻
    Finally Ding found Success ☺

Rxd4 was a brilliant move. Nepo blundered the knight, and Ding capitalized. If there's one thing about Ding Liren, if you blunder against him, he'll make you pay dearly for it. So Nepo found that out, and then the finish was just brilliant.

Ding needed a win to boost his confidence. I am sure Ding will pull it out now becoming a world champion.

Counter winning has never happened if Magnus Carlsen still defending his titile. What a prolific move by Magnus!

can someone tell me why rapport is being mentioned what's reason

It's surprising (for me) to see a move like Na5 ?!

Magnus: I do not want to spend 6 months to defend my title.
    After game 4.
Magnus: Darn, could have done it with one month of prep.

What’s crazy is that Ding said he calculated Nd4 before Ian played it and only realised it was a blunder once it was on the board, only then noticing the exchange sacrifice. Ding was lucky that in this position c5 (or c6) don’t work for Ian, as you just push d6 and black is busted.

This just shows how insanely strong and well prepared Harman mcarlsen and Caruana were

First put like and then watch the video

That old hotels business is in real trouble this season

The pass pawn is, yet again, a criminal, but with the help of his step-brother, the monster Knight.

I'm torn. I prefer Nepo's style over Ding's, generally, but Rapport is my favorite player, and I love what his presence has contributed to the proceedings. Everyone keeps wondering aloud what strange ideas he and Ding will come up with. Their collaboration has breathed a lot of life into an event that Magnus's ambivalence deflated.

i believe thats what the kids these days are referring to as a big white center 😎

I watched the supposed hand shaking part of wcc over and over on replay, and at .25 speed. Anish said it was shaking but I could find no evidence it was.

The almoghty Nepo Knoght moves..just ended in a blunder and lost him a game

Agadmator , how do you have the lines analyzed so quickly

Be careful when you put your knight on D file. It's a Ding file!

Ding is back! Such an exciting start, two decisive games in first four games, with ding equalizing just before second rest day. So momentum should be behind ding if anything.

Let's go ding, I am rooting for my boy ding! Go china, bring that last title back home! Russia has had too many already. China is also sick of women's only championships, or men's Olympiad wins. It's time for China to win the male classical world championship match title. Even India has won multiple times already with Anand. The boon to chess in China, and also by extension, the world would be immense. I really hope Ding can bring it home with style and class. Even if he loses, he has already held himself with style and class, and no offense to Ian, but imo most people in the world support Ding or find him more likable I'm guessing. Both have displayed style and class so far. Ian also. I hope this can continue the whole way.

I love Ding's way of play. He is sincere to himself and to the game. He seems weak sometimes, but he never lets the opponent to take advantage of it. Go for it, Ding.

    Thunderous applause. Ding strikes back.

Recently Dung has shown that he gets stronger as tournaments goes on. His second half in the last 2 candidates were incredible.

Another blunder by Nepo 😂, now Ding's gonna get stronger since he has equalized and now that he''s getting used to the pressure

Today, your voice was calm and your spirit was somehow a bit different to me! I don’t know why I have such impresionirao!?

Congratulations to Ding for equalizing the match. I am very much impressed by the style he showcased in this game and i believe firmly this is the beginning of Ding conquering the Title!

ag and Goth racing to be the first with the goods.

Ding's past pawn at e7 and Nepo's exposed king was desecive advantages for Ding which gave him a win.

Agad is my Favourite of them all……even if he doest post…i goes back to see all those Sagas

Kindling King - сила в правде says:

Now this is something exiting. Ian got too comfortable being in the lead, now it's a fair game for both him and Ding. Hopefully we'll get more exiting on the edge games from them.
