The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

One mistake…..damn. that too overlooking a sacrifice. Incredible stuff.

@Agadmator – you said twice that you think Nepo did not consider the exchange sac, and you said you didn't see the press conference before making this video. Well they asked Nepo if he considered the exchange sac, and he said he did, and then elaborated what he saw and what he did not see about it. Which elaboration sounded a lot more feasible to me than your guess that he didn't see any of it. Maybe it's better to see press conference 1st, make videos 2nd? Just saying…

Ding Vs Magnus would have been a better World Chess Championship

Nice job Ding! Way to come back and force tiebreaks 🙂

Nice comeback by Ding after a fairly embarassing yesterday. Game should definitely be taught to us juniors!

I found this game and game 3 to be tactically dry.

Ding! Ding!DING! expect more exchange sacs from Ding.

I wish we got 45 minute vids for the world championship reviews but this game was also fun af irl

edit: it's so awesome that this was rapport's game from 10 years ago. It feels like he's kept this secret weapon for big moments since 10 years ago like a bottle of fine wine
and he shared it with his friend Ding for him to play for the world chess championship ^^

3:14 "if you enjoy it you can play it" 🤣

    Knight on the rim: dim.
Knight on d4: Ding evens the score!

It happens again, last year Nepo lost to Carlsen because of his silly moves, and yesterday he made a mistake again. It seems that Nepo can not bear the stress of a long tournament.

Terrible explanation, just show how they played, too much nonsense speech

    1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 Ne7 5. Nf3 b6

    6. a3 Bxc3+ 7. bxc3 O-O 8. Bd3 c5 9. h4 c4 10. Bxh7+ Kh8

    11. Ng5 Qe8 12. Qh5 a5 13. Bg6+ Kg8 14. Qh7# 1-0

So, again an exchange sacrifice proves a winner.

    The belled ring.
    Sounds like
    "Ding-dong",
    With a bang.

Ding is CRUSHING on his own without his horrible seconds to sabotage him. Get Richie "h3" Crapport OUTTA HERE !!!

You said that (it's,Ruport s. Preparations) but Ding said it's all out of my home preparations after Kf4 move but you're already didn't watch the press conference as you said……

14:45 Why not just …c5? What's wrong with it? If Ding captured en passant, he would totaly ruin his pawn structure and lose e-pawn. Otherwise, Nepo's d-pawn would be safe while preventing the knight idea at the same time. If Ding pushes with d6, again …Rxe6. I'm really confused about that part. Am I missing something obvious?

I remember the time in the 2020 candidates when Ding started the tournament with a loss, but quickly recovered with a win against Caruana’s home preparation. He looks mild tempered but beneath that surface hides an indomitable iron will.

    Ding–94.1% accuracy, 1 brilliancy, 2 great moves
    Ian–87.4%

After the exchange sacrifice, a key point – which Ding mentioned in the press conference as being 'very fortunate' for him – is that after Bb3, c5 defending the d4-pawn is crushed by d6, Rxe6; Rxe6, Rxe6; d7 and that's all she wrote.

When Ian resigned, I bet he saw rook E1 check after queen takes pawn.

Is it just me or does anyone else find Giri to be an unlikeable sour-puss?

The guy openly ridiculed Dana during this game.

You give a GM a chance to push their pawns and they'll sac everything on the board to give that last pawn a fighting chance to promote. Wonderful game by Ding!

just tried to watch Dubov's review of this game…and a chess GM simply cannot talk to real people. Your reviews have all the depth, and they are understandable by everyone. Dubov is all….brownian motion. not understandable and not entertaining.

Very strange pic of nepo. Its like he has a big hook nose.

15:15 His hand was shaking probably because he knew he was winning and couldn't control his excitement! 🤯

Rxd4 is an obvious move. Bad blunder by Ian. Magnus would never do that in a championship

A most entertaining game. Well done Ding. Another great analysis by Agadmator, too. Many thanks.

10:21 after Nepo pushed f6, why did Liren not push d6 to open an attack the undefended Knight in b7 and the rook7?

Both of these players show so much psychology.

    Instead of 41. Rf1 Rh6 42. Rd1, why not directly 41. Rd1 threatening 42. Rd8 right away?

I love that Ding is finally fighting for the WC title, he deserves it 10 fold, his positional technique is absolutely brilliant

So much more exciting than the repeated draws of previous championships!

This is how Nepo plays. He's strong. Very strong. On a good day, even Magnus struggles against him in classical. But he just makes these moves, sometimes. That lack of consistency is the ONLY thing that has held him back. He may still win the match. Ding is not perfect. But Ding now has got to have some confidence. Should be fun, going forward.
