The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

why did ding double his pawns early on purpose?

It's a great game but tbh it's not up to previous years standards. It feels like watching a regular super GM game.

Ding is playing so strong not even MC could beat him here. Congrats to Agad for another fine summary.

Despite initial skepticism- this is turning out to be a very exciting WC.

😮 No "as of move X we have a completely new game" this time?

So glad to see that Ding bounces back! Team DING!

i love Ding when he doesn’t sabotage himself

Love the moment when Ding said "It's Dingin Time" and ding donged all over the chessboard. Truly one of the games.

The commentary on that final Rf1 move was exquisite!

In the last move, Nepo should have captured the queen to then let Ding capture with the pawn and promote to a knight, forking the king and the rook.

The commentary, as always, is top tier by Agad.

sometimes, time goes on without anyone on stage..that's why classic is so boring..

Nepo was thinking about that offer that the prostitute made about becoming world champion and became distracted.

@Agadmator when will you be the one making the first move in the WCC? You definitely deserve it as you're the greatest chess ambassador out there!

as bummed as I am to not see Magnus in this championship, it's refreshing seeing decisive games!

Je pense que Nepo est quelqu'un de très faible psychologiquement, il cède facilement à la pression

Has Magnus made any comments on the games so far?

who is the second to nepo in this world cup? ding has rapport we know that but whose help is nepo taking ?

I got the rook takes Knight move but didnt know what to do after that. That happens a lot for me when you pause for us to guess the killer move. I think it was all those years reading "Forcing Chess Moves" – Charles Hertan.
I highly recommend that book in paper. (I got it Kindle too but it didnt quite work for diagrams)

Jaw dropping when Ian made that blunder.

Hit the like button if you’re Team Ding!

Too many intermediate analyses makes this all too confusing. Concentrate on the game first.

The best thing about this guy Nepo is he had a big smile on his face when he resigned

People say this is not a true wcc, but honestly it is more fun than watching MC tie 12 games and beat anyone in rapid or blitz. We already know that MC won't lose… This ding vs. Nepo is a balanced game that can go either way and that's the fun part. I when was the last time both players won a single game each in the 1st 4 games??

Having Rapport has your second is such an amazing asset.. really great choice by Liren.. who is Nepo’s second??

The most repeated phrase in chess: "Nothing new here".

Everyone asking how Nepo could blunder this and I ask how did Ding find the sac?

the press conference questions were kinda strange but the game was alright

beautiful rook sac and win by Ding, just the spice we need for the WCC!

15:40 – of course Nepo is forced to capture en passant. En passant is a forced move, it's like when king is checked and you have to move.

Watching this you can see why Carlsen has no motivation to play World Championship matches anymore. He knows that no player can beat him. It's not fair to Ding and Nepo. No player will be recognized as a true champion.

I love how this WCC is turning into a brawl. It's a different game from Magnus simply destroying the opposition, and from two players drawing every match.

I just like Ding. He seems like such a nice guy.

At the expense of the nervous system of both players. I love seeing it equalized and I love seeing the tension.

So crazy. Nepo always makes these blunders.

I've always thought that you need to sacrifice to win a game, and often you know instinctively when that is: you just have to be able to hold your nerve at that moment

These games don't feel like they are from WCC.
