The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.

Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

game was worth of a world championship match. absolute masterclass

I think there are too many decissive games…They should make a draw more often

I think it was Anand vs Topalov where we had 3 decisive games(Anand 2w, Topalov 1w) in the 1st 4 games of the WCC.

Wow !! this game was a masterpiece by Ian, what an absolute brilliant attack. He played it like a true World Champion.

Im cheering for Ding but I think there is an obvious advantage for Nepo, which is that he's chill. Before the tournament, I thought Ding could win this, but idk maybe it's the nerves, Ding spends so much time and finds himself in a worse position close to the 40th move, I know it can be scary he's playing for the World Champion but Nepo is having the upper hand throughout the match till now.

Congrats on the new Camera and stuff but where's our old background!? You can't just change stuff like that in the middle of a WCC Agad!😅

If you watch it at 0.5 speed, it seems like Antonio is completely stoned =)

This just proves magnus is the strongest.. nepo can’t do this to magnus in classical

Will someone please explain to this amateur with no rating at all why the Ruy Lopez is so strong if black forces the bishop to retreat four moves in a row? Seems like a big waste of time.

Is the audio slightly out of sync?

Ty for showing the reason for the resignation. It wasn’t so clear to me.

Honestly….if Magnus was playing this WCC would be mainly draws up until now.

The man who made the first move looks like a Kazakh brother of Ivanchuk.

    In the line you showed, there's mate in 1 with …40. …qa8 41. Qxf7?

The thumbnail looks like Ian is try to choke Ding 😂

I don't think I will watch any other game. Ding is playing like p*ssy most of the time no offense.

Having only gotten into chess during the Magnus vs Fabiano WCC, it’s weird seeing so many wins in the early games. Pretty exciting stuff

There are several other 'invisible' matches.😮

The new camera, or new lighting (or setting) (I'm no expert), seems very harsh. Makes for a public bathroom aesthetic–very eggshell white and icy cool. Does anyone else feel that way?

I intend no rudeness, just a observation that may double as a suggestion.

This world championship is truly showing how strong Mangus wad in the past world championships.

Kramnik "predicted" many decisive games, as both players lacked stability. Of course he made this prediction after two wins already happened.
Quite a contrast from the Carlsen era at any rate.
Fischer-Spassky 1972 had 5 decisive results in the first 6 games. 4 of 5 not counting the forfeit.

Interesting that both players were at the table most of the time. In the first game, after move ~11, Ding took a nap in his private room for 30min. We were joking in Hikaru's livestream that we are having a "Chair World Championship".

i truly missed those few seconds of video in the beginning. thank you for the replay

Beautiful beautiful game by Nepo! ♥️👍

Both GMs aim to attack and outsmart their opponent. To provoke a misplay, not wait for it. And they play mostly top lines too. This is how human chess should look like, not 99.9 and 99.8 accuracy in every game , ‘cause “I played my home prep, he didn’t blunder, so let’s go for the fastest draw” mentality.
Mad respect to both however this ends.

Antonio you look skinnier in this video, is everything ok with you? everyone wonders about the games but is anyone wondering how our beloved Agad is doing?

What did you mean by playing knight e7 and "trading the bishops right away (4:59)"? I could not find how this is something else than a blunder and gave the position to stockfish and it is a blunder… Was that a joke?

Nepo has been superior in the last year. I doubt anyone but Magnum can give Nepo a go these days. As good as the Magnum is, I would not bet against Nepo these days.

Positionally all these games so far are very rich in alternative variations. The games with Magnus, Magnus positions like a machine, always finding the resource to defend in a minimal advantage and always exploiting the minor weaknesses to the maximum degree. Great games so far and so rich positions to be played afterwards in blitz or rapid tournaments.
