Set in colonial India in 1856, this satirical film traces the fate of Awadh, a small kingdom ruled by Wajid Ali Shah (Amjad Khan) and his team of disinterested governors. Two noblemen, Mir (Saeed Jaffrey) and Mirza (Sanjeev Kumar) go a step further and devote themselves to endless rounds of chess, while the British proceed to annex the kingdom and oust its ruler.

People like me who have read the story 'Shatranj ke khiladi' will be a bit disappointed. The film makers have distorted the story to a great extent. In the story the two friends fight and kill each other in a desolate mosque near Gomti. Premchand has used a strong metaphor through the pieces of chess. Meer and Mirja who did not shed a drop of tear for their real king Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, killed each other, protecting their kings and queens on the chess board. Many facts are missing in the movie. I liked the movie all the same for the terrific acting of Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffery and Amjad Khan.

If I would have ruled in India being a King I will work daily 8 hours in Darbar and evening will be completed with Siyasi talks with Ministers and Senapati and with all dinner daily.On Friday night and Saturday there will be party like British and Sunday will be total rest but dinner will be with Ministers and Senapati (Army General)….In above all characters I like Saeed Mirza's character being a careful soft to handle the situation and friendship with Mirza SanjeevKumar….it was sufficient to maintain rule over India being a Good administrative King looking at today's Parliamentry cheos in work…I like last dialogue "Khate jayeeye khelte jayeeye"

One line depict the whole irony of India "JINSE APNI BIBIYANHI NAHI SAMBHLI WOH ANGREJO SE KYA LANDENGE?". Great work first by Mulshi Premchndjo and then By Satyajit Ray. This is not a film but naked true of Indian history. Because of our own capabilities British were able to conquer India and rule India.

मुजफ्फर अली ने इसी फिल्म को देखकर उमराव जान बनाई।रंगो का चटख प्रयोग बेहतरीन फिल्मांकन संगीत सही कास्टिंग इस फिल्म को विशिष्ट बनाते है।लेकिन उनका कमर्शियल मसाला फिल्मों से इतना चिढ़ना पसंद न करना समझ नही आता।क्योंकि कुछ अंश तो इस फिल्म में दिखते है इस फिल्म में।
